Excerpt from The Cap and Gown in America: To Which Is Added an Illustrated Sketch of the Intercollegiate System of Academic Costume The academic gown, as used in America, is really a uniform. On its historic and picturesque side it serves to remind those who don it of the continuity and dignity of learning, and recalls the honored roll of English-speaking University men. On its democratic side, it subdues the differences in dress arising from the differences in taste, fashion manners and wealth, and clothes all with the outward grace of equal fellowship which has ever been claimed as an inner fact in the republic of learning. Excerpt from In Cap and Gown: Three Centuries of Cambridge Wit IT is my pleasant duty to express my sincere acknowledg ments to all those who have kindly allowed me to reprint their pieces in the present volume. My warmest thanks are also due to the Rev. H. R. Luard, who permitted me to consult documents preserved in the University Registry; to Mr. R. Bowes, of whose collection of books and, pamphlets printed in Cambridge I have made con siderable use; and, above all, to Mr. J. W. Clark, who, with that generosity which he extends to all who are interested in the history and antiquities of Cambridge, not only placed at my disposal his unrivalled collection of leaflets and pamphlets relating to the University, but also read the proofs of the whole volume, and made many valuable suggestions. To Canon Wordsworth's works on the University of Cambridge I am indebted for much. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Excerpt from Crowns and Coronation: A History of Regalia It must be admitted that the present age is not favourable to the perpetuation of elaborate ceremonies, but the solemnities attending the coronation of sovereigns have a peculiar interest, and, however they may be simplified in minor details, should be retained in their integrity and symbolic character. As landmarks of history they have had a material influence on the destinies of mankind. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The English Regalia N the summer of 1896 I was allowed, by Her Majesty's gracious permission, to examine and photograph the Regalia out of their cases, and without this privilege it would have been im possible to obtain plates of the excellence and reliability of those illustrating this work, as the light in the Jewel House is most unfavourable. I am also much indebted to the two Keepers of the Regalia who have been the victims of my search after knowledge. General Sir Michael A. S. Biddulph, himself an admirable artist, and his successor, lieut.-general Sir Frederick D. Middleton, c.b., have both most patiently and courteously given me every facility in their power, as well for my photographs as for my sketches, and indeed I believe they have both taken a personal interest in my researches into the history and the details of the decoration of the treasures intrusted to their care. On the occasion of my seeing the Regalia out of their cases I obtained permission to take with me Mr. William Griggs, as I mistrusted my own powers as a photographer, and was anxious to reap the full advantage of the rare occasion and get the best negatives possible. Mr. Griggs succeeded better than I had expected; but nevertheless much artistic work has been necessary in addition, in order to produce the plates in the present book. I feel that I owe Mr. Griggs many thanks for the patience with which he has listened to my various suggestions, and for the skill with which he has carried them out; and I trust that our united labours may have produced illustrations of the Regalia as they now are which may some day have an historic value beyond the artistic one which alone can be claimed for them to-day.
