Interviewing war criminals and their victims, Neuffer explains, through the voices of people she follows over the course of a decade, how genocide erodes a nation's social and political environment. Her characters' stories and their competing notions of justice-from searching for the bodies of loved ones, to demanding war crime trials, to seeking bloody revenge-convinces readers that crimes against humanity cannot be resolved by simple talk of forgiveness,or through the more common recourse to forgetfulness.

This book explores agency, reconciliation and minority return within the context of ethnic cleansing in Bosnia. It focuses on a community in North-West Bosnia, which successfully reversed the worst episode of ethnic cleansing prior to Srebrenica by fighting for return, and then establishing one of the only successful examples of contested minority return in the town of Kozarac. The book is a result of a longitudinal, decade-long study of a group of people who discovered a remarkable level of agency and resilience, largely without external support, and despite many of the people and institutions who were responsible for their violent expulsion remaining in place. Re-Making Kozarac considers how a community's traumatic experiences were utilised as a motivational vehicle for return, and contrasts their pragmatic approach to local compromise with the ill-informed and largely unsuccessful international projects that try to cast them as powerless victims. Importantly, the book offers critical reflections on the interventions of the trauma and reconciliation industries, which can be more harmful than is currently realised. It will be of great interest to scholars of criminology, anthropology and international relations.

'The last line will make you literally shout with shock' Good Housekeeping 'Terrifically twisty ... hooks from the first page' Sunday Times On a bright morning in the London suburbs, a family moves into the house they’ve just bought on Trinity Avenue. Nothing strange about that. Except it's your house. And you didn’t sell it. FOR BETTER, FOR WORSE. When Fi Lawson arrives home to find strangers moving into her house, she is plunged into terror and confusion. She and her husband Bram have owned their home on Trinity Avenue for years and have no intention of selling. How can this other family possibly think the house is theirs? And why has Bram disappeared when she needs him most? FOR RICHER, FOR POORER. Bram has made a catastrophic mistake and now he is paying. Unable to see his wife, his children or his home, he has nothing left but to settle scores. As the nightmare takes grip, both Bram and Fi try to make sense of the events that led to a devastating crime. What has he hidden from her – and what has she hidden from him? And will either survive the chilling truth – that there are far worse things you can lose than your house? TILL DEATH US DO PART. Praise for Our House: 'If 2018 brings a better book than Our House I will eat my hat. Addictive, twisty and oh so terrifyingly possible’ Clare Mackintosh ‘I raced through it this weekend. Such a smart idea. Twisty, warped, credible. Brilliantly plotted and compelling. Deserves to be such a hit’ Sarah Vaughan ‘Louise Candlish is a great writer;she inhaled me into her nightmarish world where everything we think we know is ripped from under our feet’ Fiona Barton ''A masterfully plotted, compulsive page-turner' Guardian 'Keeps you guessing to the end - and beyond' Stylist 'Whip-smart, knowing and brilliantly plotted' India Knight 'A corker' Evening Standard 'Terrific premise' New York Times 'Wonderfully plotted' Jane Garvey, Woman's Hour 'A blood pressure-raising thriller' Red ‘Gripping and heartbreaking with an undercurrent of unease running through it’ Louise Jensen ‘What a book! Fast, edge-of-your-seat stuff. Each time I set the book down I had to remind myself to breathe’ broadbeanbooks ‘Oh Louise Candlish, you are a genius! Our House is just brilliant. Scarily believable with the BEST ending I have read in a long time. I devoured it!’ Claire Frost, Fabulous magazine

Testimonies Of The City written by Joanna Herbert and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-04-01 with History categories.

Oral testimony is one of the most valuable but challenging sources for the study of modern history, providing access to knowledge and experience unavailable to historians of earlier periods. In this groundbreaking collection, oral testimonies are used to explore themes relating to the construction of urban memories in European cities during the twentieth century. From the daily experiences of city life, to personal and communal responses to urban change and regeneration, to migration and the construction of ethnic identities, oral history is employed to enrich our understanding of urban history. It offers insights and perspectives that both enhance existing approaches and forces us to re-examine official histories based on more traditional sources of documentation. Moreover, it enables the historian to understand something of the nature of memory itself, and how people construct their own versions of the urban experience to try to make sense of the past. By using the full range of opportunities offered by oral history, as well as fully considering the related methodological issues of interpretation, this volume provides a fascinating insight into one of the least explored areas of urban history. As well as adding to our understanding of the European urban experience, it highlights the potential of this intersection of oral and urban history.

Absolute Freedom written by Stefano Carpani and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-07-30 with Psychology categories.

Within this book, the fields of analytical psychology and sociology combine to examine and explore current social theory and the concept that the author has termed ‘absolute freedom’. This work serves as a vital contribution to contemporary social and psychoanalytic research, unveiling the intricacies of psychological and social dynamics in our current epoch. Stefano Carpani explores the intersection of psychology and sociology, providing a fresh perspective beyond conventional boundaries. It conducts a comparative analysis of C. G. Jung's individuation process and Ulrich Beck's individualization theory, presenting the groundbreaking 'I+I' synthesis. This latter concept acts as a linchpin in deciphering self-identity narratives in the 21st century's dynamic landscape, before the author introduces the concept of absolute freedom, contextualizing it within the multifaceted complexities of contemporary second-late-modern existence. This compelling new book will be of great interest to academics, scholars and students in the fields of analytical psychology, sociology and psychosocial studies.
