About the Book Will your life click away as a montage before your eyes when Death comes? Will it be a car wreck or cancer? Will Death appear to you as a skull-faced ghoul or avuncular guide? Rest assured, you will certainly meet him. Since humans became human, Death has harvested. Over the millennia, he has occasionally revealed himself to mortals. Nick, as a pre-teen, meets the specter after surviving a near miss. Throughout Nick’s life, Death appears on no set schedule, their conversations a mix of reveal and closely held answers to Nick’s questions: Is there a God? Is there any kind of life after death? How do you maintain such a nice tan? Nick’s search for answers continues throughout his life, at times an accepted reality, at others causing Nick debilitating pain and anger. As years tick away, Nick realizes the many cultural and spiritual differences in dealing with and accepting Death, leading him to a personal understanding that helps him cope. Nick’s story will bring hope to some, peace to many, and acceptance to most, as we all must ultimately face our own last goal. About the Author Michael O’Neal’s interest in death and dying has been there since childhood. As a teacher, he continued education in classes focused on suicide intervention, philosophy, cultural studies, and death and dying. An enlightening experience happened when he presented a salon class on death and dying at a women’s prison. A Native American woman confided in O’Neal that she’d had the Kubler-Ross experience of seeing the light. A master’s degree in multicultural education, international travel, and years of living overseas gave O’Neal adjusted perceptions of Death. Being run over as a kid, two close friends committing suicide, and assisting his brother with a dignified death, motivated O’Neal to write The Last Goal.

Playing sports is about fairness, teamwork, striving your best to score goals, triumphing over adversity and, ultimately, winning the championship. But for the professional game of hockey in Canada, there is more at stake than putting the puck in the back of the net to beat the other teams. The hallowed sport has a dark underbelly, with nefarious activities taking place both off and on the ice, as vividly described in the novel, My Last Goal. The book’s subtitle (Murder, Corruption, Money Laundering, and a Wife—What Possibly Could Go Gone Wrong) hints at the intricacies that come when the pure thrill of the game becomes complicated by criminal acts. Covering two decades, from the 1950s to the 1970s, the book centers on the story of young hockey player Larry and his unconventional relationship with Coach Bill, a former scout and pro player. He’s also one of the “original six” hockey players entangled in influencing which NHL team gets the glory of bragging rights and bringing the Stanley Cup home. As Larry grows and hones his skills, the double life Bill is leading begins to unravel, threatening to take away everything he has strived for in the name of the game.

Have you ever wondered why so many great goal scoring opportunities are not converted into goals? In The Last 9 Seconds, John DeBenedictis provides soccer coaches with solutions to this problem tackling it from a psychological perspective. How can a soccer player who can kick, pass, shoot, or head a ball correctly, often miss a golden opportunity? This book stresses how to coach the soccer players on an in depth individual basis on how to prepare to score, which usually takes 9 seconds, or less. The Last 9 Seconds is a reference book for coaches to use when their team or players are having problems scoring goals. DeBenedictis writes with passion on the topic of scoring goals. Having played as a goalkeeper he knew exactly what it took to score on him. He has studied this aspect of the game in great detail and has also included new ideas on player development and how young players learn. He truly deciphers the art and science of scoring goals. "It is an entertaining read. It is an easy read. The book just works on so many levels. This book is highly recommended." - Jay Martin, NSCAA Soccer Journal, Sept/Oct 2013
