From the legendary author of the west Zane Grey, writing with Helen Cody Wetmore: two complete novels in one low-priced edition The Last of the Plainsmen Zane Grey, chronicler of the greatest adventures of the West, and Buffalo Jones, last of the plainsmen, that tough breed who followed their dreams west, into the empty spaces of the untamed heart of the country. The land draws these men. The unsettled West is fast-disappearing, along with the wild creatures who call it home. This historical novel chronicles the last mission of the last of the plainsmen, the adventure that brought the West to vivid life for Zane Grey: track buffalo, mustang, and cougar, and bring them back, not as trophies, but alive and kicking! The Last of the Great Scouts The life story of Colonel William F. Cody, "Buffalo Bill," as told by his sister, Helen, and Zane Grey. This biographical novel begins with Bill's boyhood in Iowa and his first encounter with an Indian. We see him as a pony express rider, then near Fort Sumter as Chief of the Scouts, and later engaged in the most dangerous Indian campaigns. There is also an account of the travels of Cody's famous Wild West Show. Few other characters in public life make a stronger appeal to the imagination of America than Buffalo Bill, whose daring and bravery made him famous. At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

Last of the Great Scouts is a biography of William F. Cody a.k.a Buffalo Bill, written by his sister Helen Cody Wetmore. Buffalo Bill was of the most famous and well-known figures of the American Old West. His legend began to spread when he was only 23. Shortly thereafter he started performing in shows that displayed cowboy themes and episodes from the frontier and Indian Wars. In authors words the reason for writing this biography were twofold. Primarily, her intention was to provide an authentic biography of her brother in response to many books of varying value that have been published. The second reason was purely personal. Helen wanted to share with readers who Bill was personally and to present his true personality. Contents: The Old Homestead in Iowa Will's First Indian The Shadow of Partisan Strife Persecution Continues The "Boy Extra" Family Defender and Household Tease Indian Encounter and School-day Incidents Death and Burial of Turk Will as Pony Express Rider Echoes From Sumter A Short but Dashing Indian Campaign The Mother's Last Illness In the Secret-service Will as a Benedict How the Sobriquet of "Buffalo Bill" Was Won Satanta, Chief of the Kiowas Will Made Chief of Scouts Army Life at Fort M'pherson Pa-has-ka, the Long-haired Chief The Hunt of the Grand Duke Alexis Theatrical Experiences The Government's Indian Policy Literary Work First Visit to the Valley of the Big Horn Tour of Great Britain Return of the "Wild West" to America A Tribute to General Miles The "Wild West" at the World's Fair Cody Day at the Omaha Exposition The Last of the Great Scouts

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1918 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER XII THE MOTHER'S LAST ILLNESS It was now autumn of 1863, and Will was a wellgrown young man, tall, strong, and athletic, though not yet quite eighteen years old. Our oldest sister, Julia, had been married, the spring preceding, to Mr. J. A. Goodman. Mother had been growing weaker from day to day; being with her constantly, we had not remarked the change for the worse; but Will was much shocked by the transformation which a few months had wrought. Only an indomitable will power had enabled her to overcome the infirmities of the body, and now it seemed to us as if her flesh had been refined away, leaving only the sweet and beautiful spirit. Will reached home none too soon, for only three weeks after his return the doctor told mother that only a few hours were left to her, and if she had any last messages, it were best that she communicate them at once. That evening the children were called in, one by one, to receive her blessing and farewell. Mother was an earnest Christian character, but at that time I alone of all the children appeared religiously disposed. Young as I was, the solemnity of the hour when she charged me with the spiritual welfare of the family has remained with me through all the years that have gone. Calling me to her side, she sought to impress upon my childish mind, not the sorrow of death, but the glory of the resurrection. Then, as if she were setting forth upon a pleasant journey, she bade me good by, and I kissed her for the last time in life. When next I saw her face it was cold and quiet. The beautiful soul had forsaken its dwelling-place of clay, and passed on through the Invisible, to wait, a glorified spirit, on the farther shore for the coming of the loved ones whose lifestory was as yet unfinished....

Excerpt from Last of the Great Scouts: Buffalo Bill It is an honor and a pleasure for me to add a few words to this splendid book, "The Last of the Great Scouts," by Colonel Cody's sister, Mrs. Helen Cody Wetmore. When the history of our western frontier is at last written, the name of Buffalo Bill will stand out perhaps as no other. He was symbolical of the heroic west. He inspired the pioneer, guided the soldier, and helped the builders of the railroad. And his life was more thrilling than any wild, adventurous and moving romance. Facts may not be so strange as fiction, but they are more convincing. And some facts, if written as fiction, would be unbelievable. The early West bred men of heroic mould. They resembled the Indian in many ways, and were superior to him in all ways except perhaps the noble worship of nature. The like of Buffalo Bill, Wild Bill, Buffalo Jones, and many other famous frontiersmen will never be met with again in this world. The time needed them, and they developed. Buffalo Bill: Last of the Great Scouts is the entertaining and fascinating story of William F. Cody, known to millions for over a century as the legendary Buffalo Bill. Born in a log cabin in Iowa, he was a buffalo hunter, stagecoach driver, Pony Express rider, Civil War soldier, and a scout for the U.S. army before beginning his career as the star of Buffalo Bill?s Wild West, which electrified audiences around the world from 1883 to 1917. ø Bill?s sister, Helen Cody Wetmore, has written an affectionate biography that recalls fully both the man and the legend, his colorful personality and ironic wit, as well as his celebrated international status. Some of her anecdotes read like the dime novels they were probably based on, but others provide fascinating glimpses of frontier life. Before becoming a showman, Cody tried his luck as a land speculator, a hotelkeeper, and a justice of the peace. These pages also show the author herself growing up on the wild frontier. Humorous and informative, Buffalo Bill introduces us to an unforgettable and controversial figure in American frontier history. ø This commemorative edition includes the full text of the original 1899 edition, a foreword and afterword by novelist Zane Grey, illustrations by Frederic Remington, E. W. Deming, and Rosa Bonheur from a rare 1903 edition, and an introduction by scholar Joy S. Kasson.
