Unfortunate Destiny focuses on the roles played by nonhuman animals within the imaginative thought-world of Indian Buddhism, as reflected in pre-modern South Asian Buddhist literature. These roles are multifaceted, diverse, and often contradictory: In Buddhist doctrine and cosmology, the animal rebirth is a most "unfortunate destiny" (durgati), won through negative karma and characterized by a lack of intelligence, moral agency, and spiritual potential. In stories about the Buddha's previous lives, on the other hand, we find highly anthropomorphized animals who are wise, virtuous, endowed with human speech, and often critical of the moral shortcomings of humankind. In the life-story of the Buddha, certain animal characters serve as "doubles" of the Buddha, illuminating his nature through identification, contrast or parallelism with an animal "other." Relations between human beings and animals likewise range all the way from support, friendship, and near-equality to rampant exploitation, cruelty, and abuse. Perhaps the only commonality among these various strands of thought is a persistent impulse to use animals to clarify the nature of humanity itself--whether through similarity, contrast, or counterpoint. Buddhism is a profoundly human-centered religious tradition, yet it relies upon a dexterous use of the animal other to help clarify the human self. This book seeks to make sense of this process through a wide-ranging-exploration of animal imagery, animal discourse, and specific animal characters in South Asian Buddhist texts.

To Uphold The World written by Bruce Rich and has been published by Beacon Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-03-01 with History categories.

In 1991, Bruce Rich traveled to Orissa and gazed upon the rock edicts erected by the Indian emperor Ashoka over 2,200 years ago. Intrigued by the stone inscriptions that declared religious tolerance, conservation, nonviolence, species protection, and human rights, Rich was drawn into Ashoka's world. Ashoka was a powerful conqueror who converted to Buddhism on the heels of a bloody war, yet his empire rested on a political system that prioritized material wealth and amoral realpolitik. This system had been perfected by Kautilya, a statesman who wrote the world's first treatise on economics. In this powerful critique of the current wave of globalization, Rich urgently calls for a new global ethic, distilling the messages of Ashoka and Kautilya while reflecting on thinkers from across the ages—from Aristotle and Adam Smith to George Soros.

Faces of Compassion introduces us to enlightened beings, the bodhisattvas of Buddhist lore. They're not otherworldly gods with superhuman qualities but shining examples of our own highest potential. Archetypes of wisdom and compassion, the bodhisattvas of Buddhism are powerful and compelling images of awakening. Scholar and Zen teacher Taigen Dan Leighton engagingly explores the imagery and lore of the seven most important of these archetypal figures, bringing them alive as psychological and spiritual wellsprings. Emphasizing the universality of spiritual ideas, Leighton finds aspects of bodhisattvas expressed in a variety of familiar modern personages - from Muhammad Ali to Mahatma Gandhi, from Bob Dylan to Henry Thoreau, and from Gertrude Stein to Mother Teresa. This edition contains a revised and expanded introduction that frames the book as a exciting and broad-scoped view of Mahayana Buddhism. It's updated throughout to make it of more use to scholars and a perfect companion to survey courses of world religions or a 200-level course on Buddhism.

The Legends of King Odum Synopsis Set during the reign of the Benin Empire, Akaso, the primary literature from The Legends of King Odum, is the story told from the natives a century before Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness and after, Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart. King Odum, is an actual figure from the late 1700s. As a young prince in the Niger Delta, during the European exploration of the Guinea coast, Odum sets out on a journey to find an Ingiminji (Mermaid), a local cult figure, only to discover she has been seized by a mutinous group aboard an infamous vessel of the East India Company, The Hartwell (1787). The challenges of Prieta, the mermaid, lead to a grand alliance within the Empire. To summon the reader to better understand the culture of this novel, “Two Gods,” allows the two greatest ideas of the East and West to coalesce and ascertain the better concept. Through the guise of this cult, we discover two tales, which helped to shape the imagination and moral values of Prince Odum in, “Abayomi,” and “The Merchant’s Children.” Finally, in an act of war against Elem Kalabari, a region responsible for the sale of over 4 million enslaved persons out of Guinea, Odum is forced to relinquish his throne, in order to save his own kingdom from enslavement by neighboring tribes. King Odum, is a fallen medieval figure of precolonial West Africa researched by GI Jones, Trading States of The Oil Rivers (1963) & Kenneth Dike’s Trade and Politics in the Niger Delta (1956). The cross-cultural connections are widespread and abundant, bringing readers into the heart of Guinea and the Benin Empire, as well as the renown Frigates of the British East India Company. This short historical fiction creates written art out of history and opens an entire world for many to view with their spectacles, or open eyes, the wonders of the Dark Continent.

Religion And Identity In South Asia And Beyond written by Steven E. Lindquist and has been published by Anthem Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011 with Religion categories.

This volume brings together sixteen articles on the religions, literatures and histories of South and Central Asia in tribute to Patrick Olivelle, one of North America's leading Sanskritists and historians of early India. An exceptionally prolific scholar, Olivelle's best-known works include 'Manu's Code of Law' (2005), 'The Early Upaniṣads' (1998) and 'The Āśrama System' (1993). Over the last four decades, the focus of his scholarship has been on the ascetic and legal traditions of India, but his work as both a researcher and a teacher extends beyond early Indian religion and literature. 'Religion and Identity and South Asia and Beyond' is a testament to that influence. The contributions in this volume, many by former students of Olivelle, are committed to linguistic and historical rigor, combined with sensitivity to how the study of Asia has been changing over the last several decades. Several of the essays examine the construction of religious and cultural identity (whether among Brahmins, Buddhists, Dalits or Muslims), while others are concerned particularly with problems of historical reconstruction and textual interpretation.
