Excerpt from The Market Reporter, Vol. 1: March 13, 1920 Hogs-lighter receipts tlrarr for the previous week, a broad, eastern shipping demand, and an improved local call com bined to boost hog values during the week under review. The Chicago market closed 20 to 50 cents higher for the week, while the advance at Omaha, Kansas City, and East St. Louis was mostly 75 cents to $1. A nar rowing of the rice range between heavy and light hogs, w rich has been unusually -wide for this season of the year, was a trade fea ture, heavy hoes of desirable grade showing more advance than light weights. Quality, while continuing comparatively good, showed some deterioration, hogs running more mixed in grade and weight than during the earlier winter months, evidencing-in the opinion of some traders the beginning of the end of the winter hog crop. The average cost of hogs at Chicago on Saturday, March 6 figured or nearly $1 per 100 pounds higher than the-february low spot. Sheep and Lambs - Although receipts of sheep and lambs around the market cir cuit were comparatively light, lamb prices underwent a rather severe revision in a downward direction. The market was ih fluenced by sharp declines in dressed-lamb markets, and an additional bearish influence at Chicago was the arrival of more than head direct to packers from other market centers, chiefly from Denver. Most killing grades of lambs and yearlings de clined 25 to 50 cents at Chicago and Kansas City with some heavy weights off more at the first named point. Good' and choice grades lost 40 to 50 cents at Omaha, others 75 cents to $1, and 75 cents decline was te ported at East St. Louis. Easter demand for well-conditioned light and handy weight lambs is expected to hold such kinds at a good premium over the heavy weights dur ing the next few weeks at least, particularly as many of the Colorado fed lambs are com ing heavy. Matured sheep were scarce at all points and prices were for the most part well sustained, although some shorn wet ers took declines at Chicago and the Omaha sheep trade closed 25 to 50 cents lower for the week. Opening March 8. - The week opened with aggregate receipts of cattle, hogs, and sheep at 10' points, showing moderate de creases from the preceding Monday. Cattle trade ruled strong to 25 cents higher than the close of the week previous. Hogs also sold higher, although an opening advance of mostly 10 cents on light and medium weights at Chicago was not fully maintained. The top Monday reached $16 at East St. Louis at Chicago, at Kansas City, and at Omaha. Sheep and lambs opened the week with prices varying but siightly' in the main from the close of the preceding week, although some lambs declined 25 cents at Kansas City. With prime lambs lacking, the top on the week's initial session at Chicago. Was 5. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
