The opening decades of the twentieth century witnessed a profound transformation in the history of modern sound media, with workers in U.S. film, radio, and record industries developing pioneering production methods and performance styles tailored to emerging technologies of electric sound reproduction that would redefine dominant forms and experiences of popular audio entertainment. Focusing on broadcasting's initial expansion during the 1920s, Making Radio explores the forms of creative labor pursued for the medium in the period prior to the better-known network era, assessing their role in shaping radio's identity and identifying affinities with parallel practices pursued for conversion-era film and phonography. Tracing programming forms adopted by early radio writers and programmers, production techniques developed by studio engineers, and performance styles cultivated by on-air talent, it shows how radio workers negotiated a series of broader industrial and cultural pressures to establish best practices for their medium that reshaped popular forms of music, drama, and public oratory and laid the foundation for a new era of electric sound entertainment.

How America invented swing, how swing energized America. It was for stage bands, for dancing, and for a jiving mood of letting go. Throughout the nation swing resounded with the spirit of good times. The swing era was America's segue into modernity. But this pop genre, for a decade America's favorite, arose during the worst of times, the Great Depression. From its peak in the 1930s until bebop, rhythm and blues, and country swamped it after World War II, swing defined an American generation and measured America's musical heartbeat. In its heyday swing reached a mass audience of very disparate individuals and united them. They perceived in the tempers and tempos of swing the very definition of modernity. What fed the music? And, in turn, what did the music feed? What social structures encouraged swing's creation, acceptance, and popularity? This book analyzes the cultural and historical significance of swing and tells how and why swing achieved its audience, unified its fans, defined its generation, and, after World War II, fell into decline. As it examines the role of race, class, and gender in the creation of this music, this book tells how the genre came to symbolize the modernist revolution taking place in America. Sound design is a comparatively young member of the theatrical design family. Computer technology for sound and music, much of which emerged over this past decade, continues to become cheaper and more widely available, making intricate sonic designs more accessible now than in the past for designers and theaters alike. While this is a big step for the art of sound design, the field is still adolescent in comparison to the scenic, costume, and lighting design fields. Sound design has become a regular part of the creation of modern theatre; that said, modern sound designers might collaborate with other theater professionals who trained without significant collaboration with or influence from sound designers and sound design. As such, collaborative practices between a sound designer and the rest of a theatrical team continue to develop. Through this thesis, I hope to provide a comprehensive snapshot of the role of sound design and sound designers in modern theatre, and to illuminate important strategies for successful collaboration between sound designers and a theatrical team.

Starting from physical theory, this work develops a novel framework for the acoustic simulation of sound radiation by loudspeakers and sound reinforcement systems. First, a theoretical foundation is derived for the accurate description of simple and multi-way loudspeakers using an advanced point-source ''CDPS'' model that incorporates phase data. The model's practical implementation is presented including measurement requirements and the GLL loudspeaker data format specification. In the second part, larger systems are analyzed such as line arrays where the receiver may be located in the near field of the source. It is shown that any extended line source can be modeled accurately after decomposition into smaller CDPS elements. The influence of production variation among elements of an array is investigated and shown to be small. The last part of this work deals with the consequences of fluctuating environmental conditions such as wind and temperature on the coherence of sound signals from multiple sources. A new theoretical model is developed that allows predicting the smooth transition from amplitude to power summation as a function of the statistical properties of the environmental parameters. A part of this work was distinguished with the AES Publications Award 2010. Parts of the proposed data format have been incorporated into the international AES56 standard.
