Excerpt from The Moral Meanings of the World War: A Sermon The favor with which this sermon was received is sufficiently indicated by the fact that at its close the congregation, quite unaccustomed to such demonstrations, burst into prolonged applause. On every side were requests for the printing of the sermon; and the Men's Bible Class immediately waited upon Dr. Barton and requested a copy of the manuscript. Our pastor preached a sermon at the time of the declaration of war which also deeply impressed the congregation. It was entitled "Our Fight for the Heritage of Humanity," and was delivered on Sunday morning, April 15, 1917. Coming as it did immediately after the declaration of war, and before people generally had formulated their convictions in utterances of this character, it proved of interest and value not only to the members of this congregation, but to others far outside. It was quoted in many addresses, and favorably commented upon by men in high positions, as well as by newspapers in this country and in Great Britain. The Men's Bible Class was compelled to put it on the press several times in order to meet the requests that were received for it. We are sending this sermon forth not only as the honest and forceful utterance of our minister, but also as a fair statement of the views of this congregation. If it is significant, as we believe it is, the significance lies not alone in the fact that our minister said it, but also in the fact that this congregation is in accord with him. We believe that many people will be glad to read this sermon, and will find in it an effective presentation of the view which Christian America holds concerning the great world war. Excerpt from The Moral Issues of the Great War: Sermon of April 7th, 1918 Rarely in human history have the main facts been so indisputable or the principles involved so clear. Never in all time, perhaps, has a nation entered a great struggle more deliberately or with a greater purity and nobility of motive. We are under no illusions of ambition. We know that we can gain no territory, wealth, trade or material advantage of any kind, and we fully realize the sacrifices we are making of human life and happiness. The cost in blood and treasure will be incalculable, yet we pay it because we must, because only in this way can we protect that which gives to life its worth. And when we have won, we shall have gained nothing for ourselves which other nations, our enemies included, will not enjoy. To the clear minds which for years have watched the coming of the storm, it is all as light as noonday. The mass of the people understood by instinct. They were, therefore, never neutral in feeling, for from the very beginning there was a recognition of the fact that the success of German policy in the world would make American democracy im possible. This feeling was profoundly just, as it is perfectly easy to show. It was morally impossible for this nation to stand apart and see others battling desperately for interests which are ours as much as theirs, and it became more and more clear that if they failed we would go down in their fall. It was well to be deliberate and reluctant, possibly even when the treatment of Belgium and the sinking of the Lusi tania showed the nature of the power that threatened us, but we could not, consistently either with our real interest or our honor and self-respect, have put off our entrance into the conflict a moment longer. In our effort to understand the present crisis, we must first of all put aside irrelevant and merely subsidiary ques tions. It is not helpful to talk about the private virtues of the German people. These are ungrudgingly and gladly admitted. Nor is it a question of the value of German science and art. These, too, like the science and art of other peoples, are of value to all men, and nobody wishes to dis parage or depreciate them in any way. Nor is it true, as has often been asserted, that this war is a conflict without principle, a struggle of greedy powers for purely material advantage, in which case it would not matter much which side wins. False, too, is the assertion that increasing arma ments have caused the war. In fact, the armament of France and the British navy have saved Europe from the domination of the Kaiser and the men about him. Excerpt from War, This War and the Sermon on the Mount Love your enemies, ' verily and indeed - but it is also written, thou shalt love thy neighbour.' Take as literally as you like the words, If a man smite thee on the right cheek, turn to him the other also - yet there is one thing they cannot mean If a man smite thy sister on the cheek look the other way.' If a wanton injury is threatened to one weaker than myself and I have power to prevent that injury, then, if I fail to exercise that power, I become morally a particeps criminis, and no casuistry can absolve me from complicity in the injury itself. No act is more essentially Christlike than the deliverance of the oppressed. Even if in a particular case the threatened party would be willing in the name of Christ to submit to the injury, it is no whit less my duty to prevent the wrong being done - if possible by persuasion, if not by force. The knight-errant riding the world in search of distressed damsels to succour is as good a Christian as the Quaker literally turning the other cheek. If possible by persuasion, if not by force I have written, but it is just to the addition of the words by force that many thoughtful men, Christian and other wise, will demur. Can force ever, it is asked, prevent wrong And, if so, under what circumstances and with what limitations? On the answer to this depends the answer to the further question whether a Christian can ever justify war. Excerpt from The Sword of Christ and the World War The World War has forced many new, pressing, and perplexing problems upon the preacher. To him has been intrusted the gospel of reconciliation, of peace and good will to men, and how to preach that gospel in a world of war when nation is divided against nation and a man's foes are found even in his own national household, is by no means easy for him to determine. He may be successful in evading or ignoring the problems of the higher criticism and the doctrine of evolution; but war, with its terrible, insistent, and heart-searching questions, is a brutal, stubborn fact that must be met and answered. Let it be granted that the preacher has fallen upon difficult days. New questions which go to the very core of religion and ethics are hurled at him. A hundred new demands are being made upon his time, and when he is asked to give up his service for the advertising of liberty loans or for a discus sion of the problems of food conservation, he is sometimes in doubt as to whether the calls of coun try are the calls of God. This book, in part, is based upon addresses given by the writer to members of his congregation and other audiences, on some of the questions raised by the war. The material, however, has been revised and rearranged, and four of the eight chapters are new. It is an attempt to interpret the gospel and the duties of Christian citizenship in an age of to the people who wait upon our ministry. Excerpt from The Vital Issues of the War Now that the church seems, in the eyes of many, to have fallen from the high esteem in which it was held by a former generation, no doubt a volume of sermons, even on The Vital Issues of the War, runs grave risk of not being read. Since the war began, however, sharp criticism has been Visited upon the pulpit for evading the discussion of its compelling moral and spiritual problems; it needs, therefore, to be made known that all pulpits, to say the least, have not deserved the reproach of failing to utilize this unique opportunity. So my book goes forth, quite without apology, for what it is - the messages of a preacher to his people in the regular course of his ministry, printed as they were delivered, Wlth only the slight revision de sirable for publication.
