"Everything you might want to know about Kent Ridge in one book. Kent Ridge, a corner of Singapore island, has been home to the National University of Singapore (NUS) since the 1980s, but the area entered the historical record centuries earlier. From the white sands of its shoreline marked on navigators' maps, to the Alexandra Barracks of the Singapore Mutiny, from tiger traps and plantations to kampong and rich men's seaside bungalows, the rocky ridge running parallel to Singapore's western seashore has formed one of the most memorable of the island city-state's landscapes. Extending from Clementi Road in the west to Alexandra Road in the east, and divided by the "ninety-nine curves" of South Buona Vista Road, Kent Ridge extends its imaginative pull on many Singaporeans and visitors, but especially those who have graduated -or are studying- at the NUS. This book helps you look beneath the shiny exteriors of today's institutions, to the area's geological past, and the wealth of flora and fauna that still can be found here: from indigenous plants such as the tembusu, tiup tiup, and sendudok, to monitor lizards, flying dragons and oriental green snakes. The book guides you through the changing human geography of the region, and tells the inside stories behind the original campus master plan drawn up in the 1970s. Richly illustrated with photos, historical maps and images, each chapter of this book is written by NUS faculty and staff who are passionate about the Ridge"--back cover.

How has Singapore's environment and location in a zone of extraordinary biodiversity influenced the economic, political, social, and intellectual history of the island since the early 19th century? What are the antecedents to Singapore's image of itself as a City in a Garden? Grounding the story of Singapore within an understanding of its environment opens the way to an account of the past that is more than a story of trade, immigration, and nation-building. Each of the chapters in this volume focusing on topics ranging from tigers and plantations to trade in exotic animals and the greening of the city, and written by botanists, historians, anthropologists, and naturalists examines how humans have interacted with and understood the natural environment on a small island in Southeast Asia over the past 200 years, and conversely how this environment has influenced humans. Between the chapters are travelers' accounts and primary documents that provide eyewitness descriptions of the events examined in the text. In this regard, Nature Contained: Environmental Histories of Singapore provides new insights into the Singaporean past, and reflects much of the diversity, and dynamism, of environmental history globally.

Penang And Its Region written by Neil Khor and has been published by NUS Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-01-01 with Social Science categories.

From its beginnings in the late eighteenth century, the vibrant colonial port of Penang attracted a diverse range of peoples, enabled pioneering commercial enterprises, and fomented inter-ethnic collaboration and inter-cultural borrowings. The island came to be known as the 'Pearl of the Orient', and for many travellers it was their first port of call in Southeast Asia. In the early nineteenth century, Singapore displaced Penang in international trade, but the island remained a major focus of regional trade. For this reason, the story of Penang's relations with the Malay Peninsula and other parts of Southeast Asia reveal a great deal about conditions within the region.

An architectural and historical study of Singapore's oldest Teochew Temple. At the turn of the nineteenth century, Teochew-speaking gambier and pepper farmers settled in Singapore. Surrounded by the skyscrapers of Singapore's central business district, Wak Hai Cheng Bio temple traces its history back to the earliest days of the colony. While no written sources or inscriptions commemorate the founding of the temple, Yeo Kang Shua's book delves into the history of the temple's foundation, encountering a rich history along the way. Poetic and commemorative, Yeo attends to the testimony of the building itself--the location, materials, ornamentation, and artwork that charge the space with meaning. Divine Custody tells the story of a temple that formed and was formed by its community. Of interest to heritage studies and those seeking to understand the experience of Chinese communities in Southeast Asia, this book is exemplary in the way it uses material culture and architectural history as historical sources.

Noon At Five O Clock written by Arthur Yap and has been published by NUS Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-04-21 with Literary Collections categories.

This volume marks the recovery and first combined publication of the stories of Arthur Yap, one of Singapore's most accomplished and important writers. A hitherto neglected facet of Yap's opus, his eight short stories are deceptive in their simplicity, housing within their sparse prose a complex engagement with Singapore society from which he wrote. With his signature minimalistic style, Yap simultaneously perplexes readers with stories of seemingly plotless ambiguity, yet draws them in with familiar characters playing out situations that still resonate in twenty-first century Singapore today. Angus Whitehead's introduction highlights literary nuances in the stories and frames the stories within the wider backdrop of social change of Singapore at the time of Yap's writing. The meticulous critical apparatus make this book of interest to not only the general reader but also students of Singapore and Southeast Asian literature in English.

"Today Singapore ranks sixth in the world in healthcare outcomes well ahead of many developed countries, including the United States. The results are all the more significant as Singapore spends less on healthcare than any other high-income country, both as measured by fraction of the Gross Domestic Product spent on health and by costs per person. Singapore achieves these results at less than one-fourth the cost of healthcare in the United States and about half that of Western European countries. Government leaders, presidents and prime ministers, finance ministers and ministers of health, policymakers in congress and parliament, public health officials responsible for healthcare systems planning, finance and operations, as well as those working on healthcare issues in universities and think-tanks should know how this system works to achieve affordable excellence."--Publisher's website.
