Excerpt from How to Choose and Use a Lens: Practical Photography, No; 3 Introductory. - The purchase of a camera necessarily involves the choice of a lens, and while few beginners in photography, whether they select their cameras for themselves or acquire them by gift, make any very logical decision as to the capabilities of the outfit they desire, the time is sure to come to every amateur when intelligent knowledge of what a lens will do is necessary. We will assume that the reader is about to buy a camera, and that he knows nothing about photography. We will endeavor to show him what a lens is, and what each type now obtainable will do. With this knowledge he can study the catalogues of lens and camera manufacturers with more confidence, and decide for himself whether the expenditure of five dollars or fifty dollars for a camera and lens making a given size of picture is best for his necessities. We may say, however, that practically every step in increased price of either lens or camera is fully justified by advance in careful workmanship, increased facility of operation, or more versatile performance, and that the higher-priced outfits in case of forced sale usually bring a greater percentage of original cost. Excerpt from A Treatise on Photographic Optics The object of this treatise is to provide an account of the principles of Optics, so far as they apply to Photography, in a form which is of scientific value, while not of too abstruse a nature to place it beyond the reach of all but the professional mathematician or physicist. I have attempted to steer a middle course between giving too much mathematics and giving none at all; the former course would restrict the book to a few, while the latter would deprive it of all real value. To make the mathematics as intelligible as possible, most of the results have been illustrated by worked numerical examples, and symbolical results have been expressed in words. The chapter on aberration necessarily contains a certain amount of algebraical formulae, too many perhaps for many readers, but care has been taken to explain clearly, by means of diagrams, the principles which underlie the formulae. I have to thank Captain Abney for giving me permission to use many of his diagrams, Major Darwin for allowing me to quote from his paper on lens testing at Kew Observatory, and the publishers of Photography Annual for allowing me to copy the tables contained in 127, 151, and 156;also I owe it to the kindness of the Sandell Plate Company that I am able to give an example of a test film for the speed of plates. My thanks are also due to the Rev. W. F. H. Curtis, who first suggested to me to write, and has given me many valuable suggestions and much help. Excerpt from Photographic Optics: Including the Description of Lenses and Enlarging Apparatus To show clearly the principles on which the optical instrument used by photographers are constructed is the object of this little volume. Treatises on physics - nay more, treatises exclusively on optics - are silent about these instruments, and about terms - such as chemical focus, depth of focus, distortion, &c. - which are in daily use among photographers. This is because modem optics has been hitherto confined to the study of telescopic and microscopic lenses, which never, like photographic lenses, receive pencils very oblique to their principal axis. The consequence is, that the aberrations which must be destroyed in these objectives, namely, spherical aberration and chromatic aberration, have alone been studied. At most, the other aberrations, - namely, distortion, curvature of the field, and astigmation, - have been made by a few authors, such as Airy and Gauss, who have studied them in connexion with eye-pieces, the subject of some rare memoirs, of which, moreover, no mention is made in any work on physics or Optics. This volume is divided into two books; the first (and this is the principal one) the optics of photographic objectives, the second that of enlarging apparatus.
