Decades of research have demonstrated that the parent-child dyad and the environment of the familyâ€"which includes all primary caregiversâ€"are at the foundation of children's well- being and healthy development. From birth, children are learning and rely on parents and the other caregivers in their lives to protect and care for them. The impact of parents may never be greater than during the earliest years of life, when a child's brain is rapidly developing and when nearly all of her or his experiences are created and shaped by parents and the family environment. Parents help children build and refine their knowledge and skills, charting a trajectory for their health and well-being during childhood and beyond. The experience of parenting also impacts parents themselves. For instance, parenting can enrich and give focus to parents' lives; generate stress or calm; and create any number of emotions, including feelings of happiness, sadness, fulfillment, and anger. Parenting of young children today takes place in the context of significant ongoing developments. These include: a rapidly growing body of science on early childhood, increases in funding for programs and services for families, changing demographics of the U.S. population, and greater diversity of family structure. Additionally, parenting is increasingly being shaped by technology and increased access to information about parenting. Parenting Matters identifies parenting knowledge, attitudes, and practices associated with positive developmental outcomes in children ages 0-8; universal/preventive and targeted strategies used in a variety of settings that have been effective with parents of young children and that support the identified knowledge, attitudes, and practices; and barriers to and facilitators for parents' use of practices that lead to healthy child outcomes as well as their participation in effective programs and services. This report makes recommendations directed at an array of stakeholders, for promoting the wide-scale adoption of effective programs and services for parents and on areas that warrant further research to inform policy and practice. It is meant to serve as a roadmap for the future of parenting policy, research, and practice in the United States.

There's always that moment as a parent when you feel like no matter how hard you're trying, you just can't quite get it 'right'. But the fact is, parenting is hard and once we know this and why, we can forgive ourselves for finding it a struggle, and start to look for the things that make parenting a joy. Parenting for Humans is a book first and foremost for parents. It explores what we bring to the parenting journey - our hopes, values, views, circumstances, relationships, upbringing - and how we can gain confidence in ourselves not just as parents, but as whole human beings. As well as learning to parent ourselves, it will show us how to parent the child we actually have, not a textbook version, but our complicated, messy child with their own powerful needs. And by tuning into their language, learning how to hold them, not mould them, we can really start enjoying them for the funny and unique human beings that they are. With the right support and guidance, we can all totally do this parenting thing and grow a positive and loving relationship that will last forever.

After being bombarded by parenting fad after parenting fad, moms and dads finally have a friendly, commonsense guide to raising thriving children. Today, many parents have rejected the dictatorships they resented from their own childhoods. But they overcorrected by turning into child-pleasers. Showering praise and letting kids rule the roost has actually eroded the very self-esteem parents are trying to create. Using her clinical experience, psychiatrist Robin Berman shows parents how they can take charge while building a loving family with deep connections. How children learn love and respect at home becomes the template for how they show love and respect in life. It’s a huge task, but Dr. Berman is your ally every step of the way. Every parent’s struggles are reflected (many of them comically), but so are heartwarming triumphs. Parents, teachers and children themselves recount turning points at which they figured out what great parenting looked like and the magic it unlocked. This engaging book—a perfect mix of medical research and inspirational anecdotes—just might be the key to being the parent you want to be and the parent your children need.

In a perfectionistic parenting culture that tells you that you are never enough no matter how much you do for your kids, this unique approach empowers you with a simple parenting technique to gain confidence, remain grounded, and connect positively with your children. Dr. Alison Escalante is a board-certified pediatrician with more than two decades of experience who has spent the last ten years exploring ways to equip parents to meet their children's needs. She has experienced first-hand the culture of criticism and anxiety that drains parental joy and leaves parents feeling bad about what they should or should not be doing with and for their children. She calls this the parenting “ShouldStorm,” and this book is her invitation to escape that cycle and be the parent your child needs. In this game-changing parenting book, Dr. Escalante outlines her 3-step science-based approach to escaping the ShouldStorm and embracing should-free mindful parenting. Going into detail about each step, she clearly explains how to implement this approach in everyday situations where parents may feel overwhelmed and shares real results from parents and children who use the technique: SIGH: In moments of parental overwhelm, take a breath all the way into your belly. Imagine it's a sigh of relief. Sighs help you stop and center yourself instead of reacting to the "should" in your head. SEE: Notice what’s going on. See your child. Are they happy? Are they close to tears? Are their fists balled in anger? START: Then, and only then, start listening, and start thinking about what an appropriate reaction would be. Do they need a hug? Some space? Something else? In the vein of Good Inside, this book offers a simple approach and practical, proven strategies any parent can use. It also explores parenting culture and why it has become more and more intense over recent decades. For anyone who wants a proven toolkit for resisting a parenting culture that shames them when they can’t meet unrealistic expectations, Sigh, See, Start is your new go-to tool for joyful parenting.

Effective parenting is about raising well-adjusted children who are assets to society; Maximized Parenting is a book which promotes effective parenting through equipping parents with the knowledge that fosters proper foundation for parenting. According to Partnership for 21st Century Skills [2006] and American Management Association's [AMA] 2010 Survey, many employers believe that higher education is failing in its role to adequately develop needed skills in students. Parents with the help of this book can bridge the knowledge gap between what higher education provides and what the employment industry requires. The book is for parents who consider parenting as one of their most important responsibilities in life. One of the greatest assets a child could have is dutiful parents from whom he/she learns the act of parenting. Parents without this privilege are large in number and to them parenting is a dark continent which they find difficult to navigate. This book is written to inform, inspire and impart knowledge about parenting in the 21st century. The book would enable parents interact with their children in a way that would motivate them to be outstanding persons in life. In this information age, you cannot limit your child to how you were brought up or what you know because he/she was born in another era. The gamut of issues covered in this book will equip you to bring up your child to be successful in life. Issues treated in this book will help you know healthy parenting methods that are best for your child The book contains a very broad mix of issues a parent would encounter at every stage of a child's life. It is written from the perspective that a parent's job is for life and as such parents need help to sustain their long term commitment to their children. Issues covered include character building, instilling moral values into children, basic life skills at every stage of life, sexuality education and handling children with special needs. While the information in this book is specifically for parents, the information would be useful to fathers' groups, men's groups, women's groups, grandparents, extended family members and childcare providers that have opportunities to relate to children. Research now and again has shown that a family is more important to a child's school success than how much money the family makes or how much education the parents have. No parent who has read this book should ever ask "How can I make my child a success in life." The social commentator Michael Novak wrote on the importance of family, "One unforgettable law has been learned through all the disasters and injustices of the last thousand years: if things go well with the family, life is worth living; when the family falters, life falls apart". The goal of Maximized Parenting is to fill the knowledge gap in you that will make you a better parent as well as an inspiration to other parents of the 21st century. Choose to be an intentional parent who will put in the needed time, energy and efforts to raise successful children. Know that expensive toys and vacations are a poor substitute for the valuable time you need to spend with your children. Refuse to outsource your parenting duties to care givers and boarding schools and you will be a stakeholder in the next generations through your children who will pass on your legacies. Remember, when a parent dies, one thing that cannot be buried with him/her is his/her impact on the lives of his/her children, those things become a living memorial in his/her children.

John Piper has had a profound impact on countless men and women over his nearly thirty years of ministry. From his online ministry with Desiring God to his preaching ministry at Bethlehem Baptist to his writing ministry in over thirty books, his faithful service has encouraged and challenged many with God's Word. Piper's influence does not stem from his own abilities and accomplishments, but finds its source in his consistent and humble leading of others to Scripture, where the breathtaking glory of God is displayed in all its wonder. We rejoice and are changed as we encounter glorious truths about God in Piper's ministry. It is in this spirit that friends and colleagues of Piper, including Wayne Grudem, D. A. Carson, Randy Alcorn, and others, honor him by presenting essays covering topics central to his ministry: prayer, the sovereignty of God, justification, Jonathan Edwards, Christian Hedonism, and more. Pastors, scholars, and lay leaders will benefit from this tribute to a man who has labored so faithfully for the fame of God's name.
