It was the evening on which MM. Debienne and Poligny, the managers of the Opera, were giving a last gala performance to mark their retirement. Suddenly the dressing-room of La Sorelli, one of the principal dancers, was invaded by half-a-dozen young ladies of the ballet, who had come up from the stage after "dancing" Polyeucte. They rushed in amid great confusion, some giving vent to forced and unnatural laughter, others to cries of terror. Sorelli, who wished to be alone for a moment to "run through" the speech which she was to make to the resigning managers, looked around angrily at the mad and tumultuous crowd. It was little Jammes--the girl with the tip-tilted nose, the forget-me-not eyes, the rose-red cheeks and the lily-white neck and shoulders--who gave the explanation in a trembling voice: "It's the ghost!" And she locked the door.

Gaston Leroux's The Phantom of the Opera almost certainly qualifies as a candidate for the title of the least-read novel whose story is best-known. Thanks to a never-ending supply of adaptations into other media, it would be almost impossible to find any person who can't provide a basic summary of the book's plot. Adaptations of the story range from actual operas, to silent movies, to parodies--running the gamut from Brian DePalma's sublime rock musical Phantom of the Paradise to a stage version that mashes up Leroux's outline with Star Wars characters (called Phantom of the Empire).

In the winter of 1881, up-and-coming Swedish soprano, Christine Daaé, disappears from the stage of the Opéra Garnier during the finale of "Faust" and is never heard from again. The next morning the boots and top hat of her childhood friend, the Vicomte de Chagny, are found near a secret trap door behind stage. The young aristocrat is never seen again, and his brother's body is found on the shores of an underground lake -- drowned. At the time the opera was hounded by rumors of a ghost who lurked in the cellars, claimed box five as his own, and demanded a princely salary from the frustrated managers. But any haunting ended that night, and the mysterious Phantom disappeared as completely as the soprano and the vicomte. What actually happened in Paris during the winter of 1881? While the Phantom may be fictitious, his legacy -- like that of Sherlock Holmes or Dracula -- has made him larger than life. Gaston Leroux's Gothic novel remains simultaneously one of the most popular horror stories and love stories in world fiction. Built on a foundation of mythology, fairy tales, history, scandal, and social commentary, its themes of hatred and fear, desire and love speak to readers of any era. Filmed dozens of times, the story of the disfigured genius has been immortalized by Lon Chaney, Claude Rains, Herbert Lom, Charles Dance, Michael Crawford, and Gerard Butler. From silent film to Andrew Lloyd Webber's 1986 musical, it has captured imaginations with its Gothic glamour, romance, horror, and pathos. This collector's edition of Leroux's novel is a must-have for the story's many "phans." Complete with an expanded introduction, hundreds of notes, ravishing illustrations, and detailed commentary, it will answer questions that have plagued readers for decades: what caused Erik's deformity? Was Christine Daaé based on a real person? What historical accident inspired the chandelier disaster? How much is 20,000 francs in modern currency? Answers to these questions and more -- including eight pages of restored text left out of the ubiquitous 1911 translation -- are waiting for you inside.

On the retirement gala for the old opera managers, opera singer Christine attracts the attention of her childhood sweetheart, Raoul. One night during a performance of Faust, with the resident prima donna, Carlotta, playing the female lead, the Phantom causes Carlotta to lose her voice and the chandelier to fall into the audience.Christine is kidnapped by the masked phantom; he tells her his name is Erik and reveals her love for her. The phantom decides to keep Christine prisoner for the rest of her life, but then he allows her to leave after she promises to wear his ring and remain faithful to him. Christine later tells Raoul that she was kidnapped; Raoul promises to run away with her, both unaware that Erik has been listening to their conversation.During a production of Faust, Erik kidnaps Christine again and gives her an ultimatum: marry him or he will blow up the entire opera house. Christine refuses, but then she finds out that Erik has kidnapped Raoul as well as the Persian (Erik's old acquaintance) and has trapped them inside a torture chamber. In order to save them, as well as the occupants of the opera house, Christine agrees to marry Erik.

The story of the Phantom of the Opera, a half-crazed musician hiding in the labyrinth of the famous Paris Opera House and creating a number of strange and mysterious events to further the career of a beautiful young singer, is today regarded as one of the most famous of all horror stories: widely mentioned in the same breath as Frankenstein and Dracula. Yet the fame of this novel is based almost entirely on the various film versions, while the original book has been largely ignored and is rarely in print. An Accelerated Reader® Title.
