Excerpt from The Poultryman and Pomologist, Vol. 1: August 1, 1900 The size depends upon the advantages of the farmer. A loo-egg machine or even a zoo-egg one is small enough. If a smaller one is purchased you can't place more than its natural capacity in it, while you don't have to fill a large one yet you could put in more eggs if you wanted to. One question is will the farmer raise enough chicks to pay to buy an incubator? Does he or will he spend enough time in caring for them to make an incubator pay? In the first place, if he has an incubator it will pay because he can raise more chickens if he will spend time in caring for them. Here is another objection. Has he enough land so that he may allow sufficient for a chicken yard? Many farmers feel that all the land used for a poultry yard is wasted. They must consider what the returns. Are. If you would ask some farmers to fence off an acre of land and raise fowls in it, all that it would support, they would almost laugh at you. _an acre will be plenty for 100 hens. With proper care and feed they would bring in a profit of $100. With wheat at 75 cents per bushel it would take 133% bushels to bring in $100. It would require good land to raise that much. And besides fowls don't require the very best land, some of the poorer will do for them. But that is almost leaving our subject. Now if a farmer or anyone else wants to raise a lot of fowls he surely doesn't want to be bothered with 25 or 30 old setting hens which will break more eggs than they hatch, step on the chicks and kill them, and eat more feed than all the chicks together. Excerpt from The Poultryman and Pomologist, Vol. 1: Devoted to Practical Poultry and Fruit Culture; November, 1900 In establishing an egg strain it is import ant to have a male line that is bred from layers. Select the largest hen you have, that has shown productiveness abov'e oth ers of her class, and mate her to your best male. Keep her eggs separate and pre serve her cockerels for your male line. They will be but slightly related to the other females of your flocks. Perpetuate your male line in this manner, and do not introduce new blood by a change of males. If it is found necessary to introduce new blood, do so from the female side. This is done by procuring one or more pullets from a different strain but of the same breed as your own, breeding them to your male and the females of their get back to their sire. The progeny will then have three-fourths of the blood ofthe sire and will be safe to introduce into the flock. A direct out-cross, even of the same breeds, is apt to produce many off-colored chicks and destroy the characteristics you have been aiming to perpetuate. Ln-breeding is not the bugbear many would have us believe. And can be carried on almost ia definitely if done with judgment, yet the occasional introduction of new blood in the manner described is beneficial. By careful selection from year to year the average of your flock will be greatly increased and in a few years, instead of hens that produce 100 eggs per annum you will have the much coveted zoo-egg power hen. Excerpt from The Poultryman and Pomologist, Vol. 1: Devoted to Practical Poultry and Fruit Culture; April, 1900 It was the Monarch incubator of which, for the benefit of those who have never seen it, I will describe the heating system. Above the egg chamber is the main water tank, of oblong shape, the top of which is concave the lowest point being at the centre where the ventilator is situated and the highest points at each end: One end of the tank is connected by a pipe with the top of a smaller tank or heater outside of the main incubator, this latter tank covering the lamp. A pipe runs from the bottom of the outside tank into the incubator, makes a coil around the floor, thence ascending at the back end and connecting with the main tank thus completing the circuit. From one high end of the main tank an open upright tube is attached. In this tube a float resting on the water would rise and fall with the expansion and can traction of the water in the tank. This float was attached to a lever which was connected with an attachment on the lamp, which attachment with the rise and fall of the float in the tube would regulate the flame of the lamp. The first year 1 had the incubator it run splendidly. The trouble commenced the second year and was as follows.
