While the high cost of education draws headlines, the cost of not educating America's children goes largely ignored. The Price We Pay remedies this oversight by highlighting the private and public costs of inadequate education. In this volume, leading scholars from a broad range of fields—including economics, education, demography, and public health—attach hard numbers to the relationship between educational attainment and such critical indicators as income, health, crime, dependence on public assistance, and political participation. They explore policy interventions that could boost the education system's performance and explain why demographic trends make the challenge of educating our youth so urgent today. Improving educational outcomes for at-risk youth is more than a noble goal. It is an investment with the potential to yield benefits that far outstrip its costs. The Price We Pay provides the tools readers need to analyze both sides of the balance sheet and make informed decisions about which policies will pay off. Contributors include Thomas Bailey (Teachers College, Columbia University), Ronald F. Ferguson (Harvard University), Irwin Garfinkel (Columbia University), Jane Junn (Rutgers University), Brendan Kelly (Columbia University), Enrico Moretti (UCLA), Peter Muennig (Columbia University), Michael Rebell (Teachers College, Columbia University), Richard Rothstein (Teachers College, Columbia University), Cecilia E. Rouse (Princeton University), Marta Tienda (Princeton University), Jane Waldfogel (Columbia University), and Tamara Wilder (Teachers College, Columbia University).

Uniquely presenting a general overview of economic principles applicable to all sectors of education, Paying for Education makes key economic ideas accessible to non-economists, whilst drawing on insights from other social science disciplines. It examines the implications of its analysis, especially for two important areas of policy – paying for teachers and paying for teaching in higher education – in order to highlight some underlying issues and consider alternative policy options, as well as reflect on possible futures. The chapters examine: The value of education for the individual The value of education for society Private and public demands for education Choosing a system to supply education The cost, efficiency and equity of providing education Analysing evidence and case studies on a global scale, Paying for Education is an essential read for academics, educational administrators, policy makers, leaders in educational organisations and all of those interested in the future of how we pay for education.

A “bracing and well-argued” study of America’s college debt crisis—“necessary reading for anyone concerned about the fate of American higher education” (Kirkus). College is far too expensive for many people today, and the confusing mix of federal, state, institutional, and private financial aid leaves countless students without the resources they need to pay for it. In Paying the Price, education scholar Sara Goldrick-Rab reveals the devastating effect of these shortfalls. Goldrick-Rab examines a study of 3,000 students who used the support of federal aid and Pell Grants to enroll in public colleges and universities in Wisconsin in 2008. Half the students in the study left college without a degree, while less than 20 percent finished within five years. The cause of their problems, time and again, was lack of money. Unable to afford tuition, books, and living expenses, they worked too many hours at outside jobs, dropped classes, took time off to save money, and even went without adequate food or housing. In many heartbreaking cases, they simply left school—not with a degree, but with crippling debt. Goldrick-Rab combines that data with devastating stories of six individual students, whose struggles make clear the human and financial costs of our convoluted financial aid policies. In the final section of the book, Goldrick-Rab offers a range of possible solutions, from technical improvements to the financial aid application process, to a bold, public sector–focused “first degree free” program. "Honestly one of the most exciting books I've read, because [Goldrick-Rab has] solutions. It's a manual that I'd recommend to anyone out there, if you're a parent, if you're a teacher, if you're a student."—Trevor Noah, The Daily Show

The Price of an Education is a darkly funny story about changing gender relations in tight financial times when Britain's population (and the population of the world as a whole) is ageing rapidly and females are outnumbering males in nearly every age-group. With ever more middle-aged women still frisky and libidinous, is it their destiny to become sexual predators stalking perennially among the dwindling young to satisfy their needs? High-flying media executive Bobbie Cullen is adamant: for her payments she wants 'a high ratio of bangs per buck'. Twenty-year-old law student Leo Allen is seduced by the offer of money for services rendered: he could pay steep tuition fees without getting deeper into debt. But he adores his girlfriend Heidi, which puts him in two horny dilemmas... Hilarious and dead serious at the same time, this story shows aspects of London which visitors seldom discover. It's a walking tour of the capital city's demi-monde. With scenes in Portobello Market, King's College along the Thames, a sex pad in Primrose Hill and the Notting Hill Carnival in full swing, London is just as important a player in this vivid novel driven by character and dialogue.
