Head of the class... Garrett Daniels has this whole life thing figured out. The cocky, charismatic former high school star quarterback is an idolized football coach and "cool" teacher in the hometown where he's not just a golden boy — he's platinum. He has good friends, a great house on the lake, and the best damn sidekick a man could ask for: Snoopy, the albino beagle. Then...Callie Carpenter comes home. And knocks him right on his tight end zone. Back to school... Callie has a pretty sweet life herself...on the other side of the country. But circumstances — that she'd prefer to never speak of again — have brought her back home, helping out her parents and substitute teaching at her old high school. Now she's facing bickering, raging hormones, constant gossip, awkward weirdness, and drama galore...and that's just the teachers. Just like old times... When Garrett offers to show his former high school sweetheart the secrets of his winning teacher ways, Callie jumps at the chance - and then has to stop herself from jumping him. Good friends are all they can ever be. Or...these teachers just might end up getting schooled — by love.

Then, on to closing argument: the case is already won. Or is it? This book gives examples of how to draw on emotion to achieve multi-million dollar verdicts not once, but nearly every time. What is the common trend in these cases involving inventors of everything every thing from DeWalt power tools to Internet auctions to secret formulas for precooked Italian sausage? Take a ride through each case, their defining moments and the formula for successful advocacy with actual trial testimony from eighteen different cases spanning two decades. Ray Niro is quite the story-teller, drawing on his childhood and family experiences to bond with jurors in the most complex kinds of cases.

Getting Schooled written by Garret Keizer and has been published by Metropolitan Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-08-05 with Education categories.

In this powerful, eloquent story of his return to the classroom, a former teacher offers a rousing defense of his beleaguered vocation Perhaps no profession is so constantly discussed, regulated, and maligned by non-practitioners as teaching. The voices of the teachers themselves are conspicuously missing. Defying this trend, teacher and writer Garret Keizer takes us to school—literally—in this arresting account of his return to the same rural Vermont high school where he taught fourteen years ago. Much has changed since then—a former student is his principal, standardized testing is the reigning god, and smoking in the boys' room has been supplanted by texting in the boys' room. More familiar are the effects of poverty, the exuberance of youth, and the staggering workload that technology has done as much to increase as to lighten. Telling the story of Keizer's year in the classroom, Getting Schooled takes us everywhere a teacher might go: from field trips to school plays to town meetings, from a kid's eureka moment to a parent's dark night of the soul. At once fiercely critical and deeply contemplative, Keizer exposes the obstacles that teachers face daily—and along the way takes aim at some cherished cant: that public education is doomed, that the heroic teacher is the cure for all that ails education, that educational reform can serve as a cheap substitute for societal reformation. Angry, humorous, and always hopeful, Getting Schooled is as good an argument as we are likely to hear for a substantive reassessment of our schools and those who struggle in them.

The Crafty Poet Ii A Portable Workshop written by Diane Lockward and has been published by Terrapin Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-01-10 with Poetry categories.

The Crafty Poet II is organized into ten sections, beginning with "Revising Your Process." That section is followed by one on "Entryways into Poems" which considers how a poet might get going with a poem and how a poet might pull in a reader with humor and enticing titles. There is in-depth discussion of the importance of choosing the right words; using syntax, line breaks, and spacing to advantage; and enhancing the music of poems. There is a meaty section on how to add complication to your poems, another on how to divert or transform your poems from their original intention, and another on special forms of poems. In "Expanding the Material" three poets consider how to write poetic sequences using paintings, photographs, and history. The final section, "Revision," moves beyond the usual advice to "get rid of adjectives" as one poet offers ways to revise via sound, another offers a series of expansion strategies, and, finally, poet Dick Allen issues a warning against excessive revision. All ten sections include three craft tips, each provided by an experienced, accomplished poet. Each of these thirty craft tips is followed by a Model poem and a Prompt based on the poem. Each model poem is used as a mentor, expressing the underlying philosophy of the book that the best teacher of poetry is a good poem. Each prompt is followed by two Sample poems which suggest the possibilities for the prompts and should provide for good discussion about what works and what doesn't. Each section includes a Poet on the Poem Q&A about the craft elements in one of the featured poet's poems. Each section concludes with a Bonus Prompt, each of which provides a stimulus on those days when you just can't get your engine started.

Schooled written by Casey Clabourgh and has been published by Belevedere Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-11 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

Clabough's rough-and-tumble road to academia reminds me in places of my own. Wrought in a stately prose and devoid of sentiment, this wise book coaches us on how to keep on going even when we're at our lowest ebb. -Harry Crews Schooled is one of those rare books that tumbles out of a genreless or cross-genre void. Read closely, it reveals a being filled with pain and haunted by a nightmare, yet infused with a heaping portion of courage which never allows him to succumb. Hell, I wish Casey Clabough had been one of my professors. -Barry Hannah What makes the teachers and professors we've encountered hated, loved, or simply forgotten? How are the most memorable ones formed into those creatures who have challenged and shaped our minds and beliefs, building up or demolishing our dearest notions? What are the things inside such beings which drive them to cultivate their minds, relentlessly contemplate the world, and care enough to impart what they have learned? English professor Casey Clabough offers unique perspective on these questions and others in recounting a powerful series of unlikely people and incidents from his own formative school years which conspired, against all odds, to shape him into a college professor. Clabough is not your father's or mother's professor; perhaps he is not even the kind of teacher to which you would elect to subject your child or yourself; but his passion for life his infectious, his experiences indelible. Whether lamenting the haunting demises of two brilliant schoolmates; emulating or struggling against the values of his groundbreaking academic feminist mother ("The Skeleton Woman"); interacting with coaches good, bad, and related; savoring the sweet pleasures and hard pains of teenage delinquency; or courageously confronting his own mortality; Clabough offers an account consistently surprising, moving, and transformative, ultimately offering the moral that how a professor, or anyone, gets "schooled"-indeed, how we all truly learn and are shaped by our experiences-has almost nothing to do with book-learning and everything to do with living.

The Cultural Production Of The Educated Person written by Bradley A. Levinson and has been published by State University of New York Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1996-03-07 with Education categories.

Eleven historical-ethnographic case studies examine the social and cultural projects of modern schools, and the contestations, dramatic and not, that emerge in and around and against them. These case studies, ranging from Taiwan to South Texas, build upon an original joining of anthropology, critical education theory, and cultural studies. The studies advance the concept of cultural production as a way of understanding the dynamics of power and identity formation underlying different forms of "education." Using the concept of the "educated person" as a culture-specific construct, the authors examine conflicts and points of convergence between cultural practices and knowledges that are produced in and out of schools.
