Master's Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject Psychology - Cognition, grade: good or B+, Bahir Dar University (Faculty of education and behavioral science), course: Educational psychology, language: English, abstract: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between Emotional intelligence, locus of control, self-esteem, test anxiety and academic achievement among Bahir Dar university students. A total of 89 3rd year Educational and Behavioral science students were selected using convenience sampling method. To collect data four questionnaires (EI, LC, SE and TA) and document analysis for AA were employed. One sample t-test, Pearson correlation, independent t-test and multiple regressions were used to analyze the data. The result of one sample t-test shows that students have better level of EI. The level of students LC is slightly internal as a group. Students had significantly high level of self-esteem and students have low test anxiety level. The study revealed that positive and significant relationship between EI and AA, EI and SE, EI and ILC, in contrast EI and ELC, EI and TA shows negative relationship. All EI dimensions show a positive significant relationship with AA. The independent sample t-test revealed that there was significance difference between male and female students in EI. Meaning males have higher score than females. There was statistically significant mean difference between male and female students. Female students have high level test anxiety than male students. Females are more external in locus of control than males. There is no mean difference between male students in AA and SE. regression analysis shows that LC, SE and TA predict academic achievement. On the other hand, the effects of emotional intelligence on academic achievement were found not statistically significant. Furthermore, the effect of LC and TA on AA found to be negative.

Ensuring the health and well-being of medical students as future doctors is crucial to enable them to effectively care for the health and well-being of others. Early identification of psychological distress (i.e. anxiety, depression and obsessive-compulsive symptoms) during medical training facilitates the implementation of early intervention. The prevalence of psychological distress and its relationship to academic performance amongst contemporary Australian medical students has not been adequately reported in the literature. The principal aim of this research was to determine the prevalence of psychological distress in a cohort of Australian medical students and examine the relationship between psychological distress and academic performance. Further exploration of the role of coping in this relationship may guide the development of appropriate interventions for medical students experiencing psychological distress. The sample of 169 medical students aged 17-25 years were recruited from the first four years of a Bachelor of Medicine Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) course at a large metropolitan university in Australia. Participants completed a measure of psychological functioning that contained scales pertaining to psychological distress (depression, anxiety and obsessive-compulsive symptoms). All participants also completed a coping measure and a scale assessing attitudes towards seeking professional psychological help. All measures were completed online. Academic performance measures were medical students' Objective Structured Clinical Examination scores, written examination scores and end of year total score. The principal findings indicate relationships among psychological distress, academic performance and coping. In general, the medical students as a group reported their psychological distress within the non-clinical range. There was a subset of students experiencing psychological distress with 24 (14.20%) having scores in the clinically significant range for at least one of the psychological distress scales. Psychological distress did not vary significantly between campus-based (years 1 and 2) or hospital-based (years 3 and 4) levels of training. Results showed that greater symptoms of depression were independently associated with lower academic performance and that higher avoidant coping was a consistent independent predictor of greater levels of psychological distress. The use of problem-focused coping was associated with reduced symptoms of depression and anxiety. Compared to men, women reported more symptoms of anxiety and greater levels of seeking support. Greater use of avoidant coping was associated with lower academic performance. The findings of the current study cannot identify causal relationships but they highlight that psychological distress is prevalent in a subgroup of medical students and that there is a relationship between depression and academic performance in medical students. These research findings also highlight the importance of addressing and monitoring symptoms of psychological distress. Interventions provided to medical students should address both depression and academic performance as well as reduce the use of avoidant coping behaviours and increase problem-focused coping skills. Further research is indicated to ascertain whether such interventions are effective in reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression and improving academic performance amongst medical students. Further research is also needed to elucidate the nature of the relationship between psychological distress, coping and academic performance.

Nowadays, society is constantly changing, and new ways of life are being developed by due to nonstop technological advancements. This generates changes in family, schools, the media, etc. New technologies are creating virtual environments to manage learning and academic achievement, and this is a new challenge to approach formal and informal education. In the last few decades, teachers, families, and educational administrators had very well-defined fields of action and roles to play. Now, these roles are disfigured, and influences from all agents are arguable and more difficult to face. At this current stage, problems sometimes appear that require different forms of intervention. Some of the problems are violence towards people; child abuse; drug abuse at increasingly early ages; integration problems due to immigration; dropping out of school; and typical problems related to student development, personality, disabilities, social and psychical maladjustment, teenagers socioaffective relationships, etc. Research on school success and failure has a long history, but there is still no agreement concerning the prevalence of these variables to explain academic achievement, the relationship between those variables, and which other variables modulate their level of impact. For many years, cognitive psychology has emphasized cognitive function as the most relevant for learning in school. However, recent studies highlight the importance of motivational and affective functions in building consistent models to explain learning and academic achievement. This change of perspective, from the classical cognitive model to a self-regulated learning model, has implied a new orientation in the research of the factors involved in school success and failure. Self-regulated learning models try to integrate students cognitive, socioaffective, and behavioral aspects. These models describe the different components involved in successful learning at all school stages, explaining reciprocal relationships between those components and directly relating learning to personal achievement, motivation, volition, and emotions. With this new paradigm, students not only contribute to strengthening their intelligence, but also their motivational and emotional qualities, all related to achieving personal balance. This book presents studies, ideas, and recommendations to shed light on the complex educational world. Education has limits and difficulties, but it is also the only instrument that can develop students potential into personal success.
