Excerpt from The Shorter Bible: The Old Testament In the translation the aim has been to translate the original Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek idioms into their modern English equivalents - that is, to make it literal rather than literalistic, and to present the thought of the Biblical writers so simply that it can be easily understood by all. The editors desire to express their deep sense of indebtedness to the many scholars who have prepared the way and to the host of devoted friends who have generously aided in this work. Excerpt from A Short History of the Hebrew Text of the Old Testament The following pages would not have seen the light but for the fact that there is no precisely similar composition, going over the same ground, in existence. The object aimed at has been to trace the growth of the Hebrew text from its beginning until it reaches the form in which it appears to the reader of a modern printed Hebrew Bible. It has been sought to explain everything which meets the eye on the printed page, or to indicate where such explanation may be readily found. Excerpt from A Smaller Scripture History: In Three Parts: Old Testament History; Connection of Old and New Testaments; New Testament History to A. D. 70 To Simplify the plan, and to suit the comprehension of the young, the book is confined for the most part to a narrative of leading facts, avoiding critical discussion on the one hand, and theological exposition on the other. The Notes, which have been added very sparingly, on points which could scarce ly be left unexplained, are intended chiefly, for the teacher. Other matters, which the teacher may desire to introduce at his discretion, will be found in the Student's Manuals of Old Testament and of New Testament History, the order of which is here generally followed. As the book is meant to be used with, and not at all in place of, the Bible, many of those exquisite stories, which are only Spoiled by the attempt to repeat them in other words, are merely referred to, leaving the details to be read in Scripture itself; and thus space has been gained to make the general narrative more complete. Excerpt from The Holy Bible, Vol. 1: Containing the Old and New Testaments With the Apocryphal Books 4. Alfred, in his zeal for the improvement of his country, did not overlook the importance of vernacular Scripture. At the head of his laws he set in Anglo-Saxon the ten commandments, with such of the Mosaic injunctions in the three following chapters of Exodus, as were most to his purpose. What other parts of the Bible he translated, it is difficult to determine. A remarkable passage in his preface to the Pastoral of Pope Gregory, leaves no room for doubt, that if the more necessary portions of holy writ were not made accessible to his subjects in their own tongue, it was only because this wise and pious prince failed of the opportunity to accomplish his wishes. 5. Whatever might be the extent of Alfred's biblical labours, it is beyond question that soon after his days the Anglo-Saxon church had her own interpretations of those parts of Scripture which were in most frequent use. The Psalter ascribed to Aldhelm, if it be not the work of that prelate, certainly cannot be later than the ninth century. To the same period may be safely attributed the Anglo-Saxon translation of the Gospels. Several MSS. of it are preserved; but none of them appear to give the version in its original purity. Successive transcribers adapted the language to the idioms and inflexions of their own times and provinces. Some however of the copies are earlier and less degenerate than others. The latest seem to be considerably subsequent to the conquest, the most ancient may have been written more than a hundred years before it. 6. But it was not solely to this version that the unlettered Anglo-Saxon was indebted for a knowledge of what the Evangelists record. Access was also afforded to their narratives by means of verbal glosses made in copies of the Latin Gospels. These glosses were written between the lines of the text, rendering it in the same order word by word. Of the two glosses which are now exstant, one is found in the famous book of Durham, and was made by the priest Aldred, probably in the tenth century; the other of the same age is contained in a Ms. of the Bodleian Library, and had for its authors Owun and Farmen, the latter a priest at Harewood. 7. Similar glosses had been made on the Psalter. A gloss of this kind, probably of the ninth century, was published in 1640 from a Ms. belonging to sir Henry Spelman, by his son, afterwards sir John. Another gloss of the same period was published by the Surtees Society in 1843. Variations from these glosses are found in several other MSS. Glosses also occur on the canticles of the church, and the Lord's prayer; on portions of Scripture in the ritual of Durham, and on the more difficult words of the book of Proverbs. Remnants Of The Later Syriac Versions Of The Bible written by John Gwynn and has been published by Forgotten Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-12-03 with categories.

Excerpt from Remnants of the Later Syriac Versions of the Bible: In Two Parts; Part I: Of New Testament; Part II: Of Old Testament The contents of this Volume are by no means homogeneous. Under the comprehensive head of Remnants it includes portions of the Old Testament and of the New: the former being excerpts merely; the latter, complete Epistles: the former belonging indisputably to the seventh century; the latter, to be assigned rather to the sixth of the former it merely exhibits the text preserved in a single manuscript; of the latter, it offers a critical edition based on an ample Apparatus of authorities. Thus the two Parts into which it is divided have hardly anything in common, save what the Title expresses, - that both belong to the later Syriac Versions of the Bible, and that of the Versions to which they severally belong neither has reached us in a complete form. In Part I, I present a thoroughly revised text of the Four shorter Catholic Epistles, which are not found in the Peshitta, but of which this anonymous Version is, and has for nearly three centuries been, included in the printed editions of the Syriac New Testament. And in the Introduction I have set forth the grounds on which I claim for it that it belongs to the Philoxenian New Testament of ad. 508. Part II consists of Extracts from the Version of the Old Testa ment, after the Hexaplar Greek text of the Septuagint, which is known to have been made between ad. 613 and 619. They are all (except the first two) taken from the Books of Chronicles and of Nehemiah. None of these extracts, - in fact, no portion of the se-hexaplar text Of these Books - has hitherto been published. To have placed these Old Testament Extracts before the New Testament Epistles would have been a more obvious arrangement. Excerpt from A Short Analysis of the Old Testament: By Means of Headings to the Chapters, Especially Adapted to the Revised Version; A Conpanion in Reading, a Table of Contents, and a Skeleton Commentary One of the instructions to the Companies engaged from 1870 to 1884 upon the revision of the English Bible was to revise the headings of chapters and pages, paragraphs, italics, and punctuation but the first part of this instruction was never carried out. The Revisers' preface to the Old Testament says, One consequence of the arrangement in paragraphs has been the omission Of the headings of chapters, which for other and more important reasons it was thought advisable to abandon, as involving questions which belong rather to the province Of the commentator than to that of the translator. The Date Of Mark S Gospel written by James G. Crossley and has been published by A&C Black this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004-06-15 with Religion categories.

This book argues that Mark's gospel was not written as late as c. 65-75 CE, but dates from sometime between the late 30s and early 40s CE. It challenges the use of the external evidence (such as Irenaeus and Clement of Alexandria) often used for dating Mark, relying instead on internal evidence from the gospel itself. James Crossley also questions the view that Mark 13 reflects the Jewish war, arguing that there are other plausible historical settings. Crossley argues that Mark's gospel takes for granted that Jesus fully observed biblical law and that Mark could only make such an assumption at a time when Christianity was largely law observant: and this could not have been later than the mid-40s, from which point on certain Jewish and gentile Christians were no longer observing some biblical laws (e.g. food, Sabbath).
