The Gospel of John is a complex and intriguing testament, written on multiple symbolic levels—but it tells a very human story. Jesus was fallible; he made errors of judgement and found his plans scuppered more than once. In this gospel he is not divine and there are no miracles; every aspect of the text was written with both a theological and a mundane intended meaning. The significance of the former outweighed that of the latter for Lazarus, who found some aspects of the movement difficult to chronicle. The gospel thus contains secrets—hidden knowledge—but the keys for unlocking these secrets are provided for those who seek them. That others have discovered this version of the Gospel of John is evident in works of art and literature over the centuries, as elements of the ‘heretical’ story were hidden within their masterpieces; a 16th-century painting and the legends of King Arthur are discussed as examples. The Testament of Lazarus reveals that: ⸙ Jesus was a Samaritan by blood ⸙ His goal was to return a purified Israel to Shiloh, Samaria ⸙ He was married with grown children ⸙ His relationship with John was not what we think ⸙ Mary and Lazarus were central to Jesus’ plan ⸙ Peter was jealous, ambitious, and scheming ⸙ Jesus was held responsible for violence that got many killed ⸙ Pilate crucified another ‘disciple’ out of spite ⸙ Jesus survived the cross for a short time ⸙ Lazarus, Mary, and the son of Jesus were the real “Holy Family” Janet Tyson has an MA in Biblical Studies and was a T&M Wagner Foundation Graduate Fellow (UBC, Canada). She is the author of She Brought the Art of Women: A Song of Solomon, Nabonidus, and the Goddess.

Shortly after the middle of the eighteenth century a number of thinkers from the German-speaking lands began to create a paradigm drawn from their impressions of a distant historical reality, ancient Athens; added to it a new mode of thought, modern dialectics; and at times even paid homage to the ancient Greek deity Dionysos, to materialize their longing for an ideal. The influence of these forces came to permeate modern German consciousness, deifying the concept and activity of art, reviving the Platonic (and Sanskrit) vision of the cosmos as play and aesthetic creation, and projecting a way of life and labor that would honor not the commodity but the aesthetic product. With rigorous commitment to primary sources and an unflagging critical engagement with the ideas and concrete situations they raise, Josef Chytry provides a comprehensive and extensive study of this central motif in German thought from Winckelmann to Marcuse. Chytry takes "aesthetic state" to signify the concentrated modern intellectual movement to revitalize the radical Hellenic tradition of the polis as the site of a beautiful or good life. The movement begins with the classicism of Winckelmann, Wiemar aesthetic humanism (Wieland, Herder, Goethe), and Schiller's formal theory of the aesthetic state and continues through the idealism of the Swabian dialecticians Holderlin, Hegel, and Schelling and the realism of Marx, Wagner, and Nietzsche. It culminates in the postrealism of Heiddegger, Marcuse, and the aesthetic modernist artist Walter Spies, who initiated a dialogue with the non-Western "theatre state" of the isle of Bali. Josef Chytry concludes that the future speculation on the ideal of an aesthetic state must come to terms with the postrealist themes of ontological anarchy, aesthetic ethos, and theatre state. In a bold effort to stimulate such speculation, Chytry indicates how proponents of the aesthetic state might join forces with Rawlsian political theory to promote further the organon of persuasion that, in his view, serves as the common fount for the ancient, dialectical, and contractarian quests for the polis. This book offers a concise introduction to Gottfried von Strassburg's Tristan. The work is approached both through its context and through a close reading of key passages of the text. The contextual reading compares Gottfried with his predecessors Beroul, Eilhart and Thomas in order to reveal his independent response to the problems and possibilities with which he was confronted by his material. The close textual reading builds up a distinctive interpretation of the work, in which particular attention is paid to Gottfried's reworking of literary tradition, his use of religious analogies and his awareness of the fictive potential of literary language. A concluding chapter examines Gottfried's medieval reception through the work of his continuators, Ulrich von Turheim and Heinrich von Freiberg and the Herzmaere of Konrad von Wurzburg.

This is a story about a very unique young man, a man who, in essence, was truly a child at heart. I came to know Tristan as someone who was filled with love for others, especially those that have been rejected by life and society. He himself was a child that had endured rejection by society in general, but also, there was rejection by some family members, as well. Yet itaEUR(tm)s a story of great triumph, a story where victory came into his life. A story of overcoming all the ugliness that life can bring into a personaEUR(tm)s life.Life has a way of bringing tragedy into oneaEUR(tm)s life, and the character of a person can be determined by the tragedies they experience. Tristan encountered his tragedy at a very young age, when he was four years old. In life, we either overcome tragedies, or they will overcome us. This is the story of how Tristan overcame his and became the wonderful child you will read about. There was much pain, suffering, heartbreak, and rejection in his short life. Yet this precious child emerged victorious when it was all said and done. He was blessed with many gifts and talents, and he was able to express these through his writings, which I have shared herein. One of his best gifts was his ability to love others despite his lifeaEUR(tm)s struggles. He had a heart of compassion for the less fortunate. He loved others with his whole heart. He was a very intelligent young man, had a great sense of humor, and was a wonderful poet. As you read his story, IaEUR(tm)m sure it will inspire and encourage others who may have experienced rejection and tragedy in their lives or in the lives of those they may know. This is my hope. His life definitely inspired me. This story is about a child who battled sexual abuse at a very young age, rejection, and drug abuse. Yet he overcame, and I hope it inspires others with the same hope, that they also can overcome. It was a great privilege for me to know this precious child, and IaEUR(tm)m sure that those who read his story will come to feel the same. ItaEUR(tm)s a story of triumph.

This volume comprises selected papers from a Tristan symposium held at the Institute of Germanic Studies in London. The symposium was conceived by the organizers as an experiment in transatlantic dialogue and the papers represent the views of scholars from a variety of North American and British universities. The main focus of attention is Gottfried's Tristan. Familiar assumptions about the text are questioned and fresh perspectives are offered on many contentious issues: those disagreements which persist are themselves a reflection posed by Gottfried's masterpiece. In addition, new light is thrown on the treatment of the Tristan theme in medieval and modern times.Contributors are: MICHAEL CURSCHMANN, W.J. MCCANN, MARGARET BROWN, C. STEPHEN JAEGER, M.H.
