The Trail of Tears is the name used to describe the forced migration of the Cherokee people in the 1830s from their homelands in the southeastern United States to land in what’s now Oklahoma. This devastating journey took the lives of thousands of Native Americans, and it’s one of the most shameful chapters in American history. Detailed main text—supported by enlightening sidebars and primary sources—gives readers a clear picture of the reasons the Cherokee people were forced from their homes and what happened to them on the difficult journey west.

A WORD FROM LOUIS L’AMOUR “Almost forty years ago, when my fiction was being published exclusively in ‘pulp’ western magazines, I wrote several novel-length stories, which my editors called ‘magazine novels.’ In creating them, I became so involved with my characters that their lives were still as much a part of me as I was of them long after the issues in which they appeared became collector’s items. Pleased as I was about how I brought the characters and their adventures to life in the pages of the magazines, I still wanted the reader to know more about my people and why they did what they did. So, over the years, I revised and expanded these magazine works into fuller-length novels that I published in paperback under other titles. “These particular early magazine versions of my books have long been a source of great speculation and curiosity among many of my readers, so much so of late, that I’m now pleased to collect three of them in book form for the first time. “I hope you enjoy them.”

For more years than most of todays population could possibly recall, I had been writing poems about my family, my own true adventure stories, and just about anything of interest to me, which has been just about anything! I had catalogued, shelved, boxed, and stored material throughout the years all the while that I had been experiencing the many facets of my more varied than some life. From the time that I was a little farm kid, the workings of nature and its wild faces had held intrigue to my mind. Consequently, by the time that I became old and bold enough to begin my own quest of adventure, I just plainly let it happen. Any opportunity to explore life and of things not yet known to me became open season for my whims. In those early years, I had managed to scribble down numerous discoveries that evolved as I waded through lifes happenings. Eventually, I had accumulated many written utterances and at first kept them in piles and eventually files. Through the urgings of family and friends, it has come to the point of sharing my writings of adventurous ramblings with others. But where should I start? The grab bag of writings that I have dealt from for this first widely published volume of mine, which I had decided to name Down Lifes Trail, for in many ways, it does reflect selections written by myself along the bumpy road of life. At the age of twenty-two, I had started out on my own after schooling for the profession as a photographer. This required traveling many miles, first within Maine then to other locations across the country, and involving aerial photos along with all others. I had recorded and kept records of many of the special locations that I had flown over or photographed, both in writings and photos. Now has come the time for me to pursue the publishing of some of my collections. I had promised to my local audience that had been reading my work over the years that I would indeed take a shot at publishing a book of poetry. My decision (right or wrong) is now to begin my offerings with this aptly named volume of Down Lifes Trail, for the following has been derived from short story poems written as I was tripping along lifes trail. Hopefully, you will read and enjoy the enclosed pages that have been randomly selected from the far reaching trail of my life.

Native peoples of the United States have rich histories and traditions that help them maintain varied cultural identities in modern society. Primary sources and annotated quotes show readers the Trail of Tears from the perspective of those it affected. A detailed timeline and discussion questions add to this essential reading experience that illustrates many of the struggles Native Americans have experienced, up through to today.

The most comprehensive and authoritative guide to the Olympics, first published more than 35 years ago Sales of this new edition benefit Olympic Mountain Rescue Olympic Mountains Trail Guide is a treasured, classic guidebook to one of the region’s top hiking destinations. Reading Bob Wood’s text is like having an old friend describe last weekend’s hike to you. Wood passed away in 2003 but Bill Hoke, Doug Savage, and volunteers from the Peninsula Wilderness Club picked up the reins to do a thorough update. Every trail has been rehiked and fact checked. Every new trailhead or rerouted path is documented in the descriptions, and 30 all-new trails have been added, bringing the total number of hikes to 206 within Olympic National Park and Olympic National Forest. But Wood’s voice and even his original overview maps have been retained, lending this edition a classic tone while the information is decidedly current.
