It is widely recognized that spiral grain in trees severely reduces the value of sawn timber through warping and loss of strength, and that it also causes problems for other wood uses as diverse as transmission poles or plywood. Yet, paradoxically, there are highly valued grain patterns including wavy and interlocked grain, whose origins in the cambium invite direct comparison with those of spiral grain, so that many authorities believe them to be related phenomena. In recent years this concept has prompted extensive research into the anatomy, genetics, and physiology of all such grain patterns in wood. As a result it has become apparent that tree cambia provide excellent systems through which to study the origins of stem polarity and the complex processes of morphogenetic control in plants. Beside these and other pressing topics for research, the book examines methods of measuring grain deviations, and considers their influence on wood properties, on the economics of timber production, and on wood manufacturing.

Fifth International Conference On Mathematical And Numerical Aspects Of Wave Propagation written by Alfredo Berm?dez and has been published by SIAM this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000-01-01 with Science categories.

This conference was held in Santiago de Compostela, Spain, July 10-14, 2000. This volume contains papers presented at the conference covering a broad range of topics in theoretical and applied wave propagation in the general areas of acoustics, electromagnetism, and elasticity. Both direct and inverse problems are well represented. This volume, along with the three previous ones, presents a state-of-the-art primer for research in wave propagation. The conference is conducted by the Institut National de Recherche en Informatique et en Automatique with the cooperation of SIAM.

Considerable activity in the acoustics of wood has occurred since the first edition of this book in 1995. An informal survey of a number of the published articles and papers presented at international conferences revealed that the interest of the wood science community is continually increasing. In this context, I felt c- pelled to revise the text in accordance with newer findings and this prompted the addition in the present book of 159 new references added to the existing 850 in the first edition. As a result of the favorable comments upon the first edition, from students and colleagues, I have included a part on mathematical theory related to wave pro- gation in orthotropic solids in the general text, in order to enable the interested reader to follow the essentially physical aspects of the subject. A new chapter related to “acousto-ultrasonics” is introduced; Chapters 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12 have been considerably expanded and a significant redistribution of the subject matter from the earlier edition has been made.

A Survey Of The Principles And Practice Of Wave Guides written by L. G. H. Huxley and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-02-04 with Science categories.

Originally published in 1947, this book was written to provide an introductory survey of the developments in electromagnetic waves. Although the propagation of electromagnetic waves in metal tubes - wave-guides - had been studied for over fifty years prior to the publication of this book, the subject was primarily of theoretical interest. The treatment in this book reflects the movement away from the theoretical to a more practical interest in waves during the war, with the development of the first micro-wave radar equipment in 1940-1. The first six chapters are based on courses on microwave techniques, which were given during the war at the Radar School of the Telecommunications Research Establishment, whilst chapter seven is a mathematical treatment of the subject. This book will be of great value to scholars of the history of physics and electromagnetics.

Acoustics of Wood offers a detailed treatment of numerous topics that are valuable to those working with wood in architecture, engineering, acoustics, and the crafting of musical instruments. It presents a comprehensive account of the progress and current knowledge concerning wood acoustics, outlining the anatomy and physiology of wood and the specific applications in which its acoustic properties are relevant. Acoustics of Wood reviews state-of-the-art measurement systems and includes material that has not been widely published. Divided into three main parts, the book describes environmental acoustics, presents acoustics methods for the characterization of the elastic behavior of wood, and discusses acoustic methods for the assessment of wood quality.
