THE WRITING LIFE Thoughts along the Writing Journey: A book being written "on the go" From my blog at https: //craigswritingjourney.wordpress.com/ About the Author Craig is an extensive world traveller (on a "shoestring budget") and failed professional emigrater who has spent most of his lifes savings on airfares. He is still sliding down the razor blade of life on the beautiful undiscovered island that is New Zealand, somewhere near the bottom (rude!) of the world near Antarctica. There he talks to the 60 million sheep! Through a rather strange set of circumstances and finding himself in a small town near the bottom of the world ...and with nothing else to do, he started writing. Craig loves to encourage and empower people to be the best they can possibly be, and to encourage, help and support people in creating what they most want in life "Together, one mind, one life (one small step at a time), let's see how many people (and lives) we can encourage, impact, empower, enrich, uplift and perhaps even inspire to reach their fullest potentials...and strive for and perhaps one sunny day even achieve their wildest dreams." "You will do foolish things, but do them with enthusiasm." -Colette INTRODUCTION: Five years ago my wife Gill felt compelled because of a series of traumatic and unavoidable circumstances to return to her home town in New Zealand. She had been away about 15 years first doing her nursing training in another NZ city, then working in England, where she met me, then living in South Africa with 'yours truly'. I won't go into the rather bizarre set of circumstances now, because that can be the subject of another book. All I will say is that it was a very stressful time of our lives. Either fortunately or unfortunately, I was also dragged along with our twin boys G and S. We were powerless to withstand this irresistible force of human nature. I was shot in the posterior by an anaethetised dart and when I woke up I found myself in "Sleepy Hollow." The boys were six at the time and already seasoned jet-setters around the world, unlike their "poor" parents. These are the circumstances which led to our adventures into the unknown, far, far away from 'civilisation'. This manuscript is our account of our experiences, impressions and life "down under" - on the other side of the world from vibrant and colourful South Africa, "the beloved country." I have always lived in big cities, mostly in Cape Town... but also in London, Durban, Wellington (NZ) and also in Perth in Western Australia. So it was quite a culture shock to experience the very different and strange attitudes of small-time provincial New Zealand. It has certainly been quite an experience to sample the "atmosphere" in this country town in the midst of the passionless country as New Zealand is sometimes called. Note though that they are NEVER EVER passionless about their rugby or 'footie' as it is sometimes known. Even ordinary housewives have their strong views on the scrummaging technique of the All Black front row. It has even been a great culture shock for my quiet, yet powerful wife ("TT"), who left "Las Vegas" about twenty years ago to travel the world and find me. Shame*! Poor Gill drawing the short straw! She thought she'd married an insurance executive for my money, but ended up with a penniless writer. * Shame is a very 'Sutheffrikun expresshn', that women especially say when ogling little 'crappy' babies. For the sake of good taste and diplomacy and so as not to offend the locals (who are offended very easily anyway and are fiercely parochial and protective of their city of 30000+ people), I will not mention my place of residence by name. Instead I will call it "Sleepy Hollow" in 'never-never land'. The following is a factual account of our sojourn here over the last five and a bit (now twenty-five!) years... Updated July 2015 from Dropped out in Godzone by "Ray and Gill Carruthers"

Being a writer is not just about typing. It’s also about surviving the roller-coaster of the creative journey. Self-doubt, fear of failure, the need for validation, perfectionism, writer’s block, comparisonitis, overwhelm, and much more. When you’re going through these things, it can feel like you’re alone. But actually, they are part of the creative process, and every author goes through them too. This book collects the mindset issues that writers experience, that I have been through myself over the last ten years and that perhaps you will experience at different times on the creative journey. Each small chapter tackles a possible issue and then offers an antidote, so that you can dip in and out over time. It includes excerpts from my own personal journals as well as quotes from well-known writers. I hope it helps you on the road to becoming a successful author. The book includes: Part 1: Mindset Aspects of Creativity and Writing Self-doubt and imposter syndrome Need for validation Fear of failure Fear of rejection and criticism Your inner critic Fear of judgment Perfectionism Writer’s block and procrastination “I’m not creative. "This happens when finding the right words is no longer a struggle. Words simply flow into your head faster than you can write them down (or press the keyboard). You read what you have just written and say: "Bloody hell. That's good. Did I really write that? Wonder where all that came from."- A "nony-moose" writerclick on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ogPZ5CY9KoM"Suddenly I realised that I was no longer driving the car consciously. I was kind of driving by instinct, only I was in a different dimension. I was way over the limit; but still I was able to find even more. It frightened me, because I realised I was well beyond my conscious understanding."- the late , great Ayrton SennaWriters, like racing drivers, challenge themselves and their readers in new ways, They find new niches "writing on the edge". I want to continually test my own writing "limits", the "boundaries of my imagination."I love writing about 'ordinary' (what's that?) people doing extra-ordinary things. I find these stories hugely empowering and inspirational on my own journey "on the path less travelled". I hope these thoughts on the writing journey may be uplifting, empowering (edifying), enriching and perhaps even inspirational to you. m Enjoy..."Far better is it to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checked by failure...than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in a gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat."- Theodore Roosevelt quotes (American 26th US President (1901-09), 1858-1919)"It is from numberless diverse acts of courage and belief that human history is shaped. Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance."- Robert Francis Kennedy quotes ( US attorney general and adviser, 1925-1968)"The important thing in life is not to triumph, but to compete, it s not victory but combat, not to have vanquished but to have fought well, not winning but taking part."- Pierre de Coubertin (French Educator, primarily responsible for the revival of the Olympic Games in 1894. 1863-1937)"Literature is the supreme means by which you renew your sensuous and emotional life and learn a new awareness."- Leavis*"I want to write the way Gilles Villeneuve drove and power-slid his blood-red Formula One Ferrari... with wild enthusiasm and a sense of abandonment, combined with the artists craft of a Stirling Moss, a Jim Clark, and especially that of the great Ayrton Senna, living on the razor-blade edge of life.""Grand Prix racing is primarily a mental contest... it's a battle of strengthof wills by the combatants and a magnificent contest, the arena to displayand share unique gifts and talents. Perhaps in this 'theatre of speed' F1 is a metaphor for life itself"- craig"Schumachers 2010 return shows the dream still burns - but the rest of us 'losers' should take heart. The key here is the dream, rather than its realisation. It may not be explicable to us mere mortals, but the more I heard about this 'Heaven on Earth' called the Zone, the more I was convinced it is the true Holy Grail - not just for racing drivers, but for all human beings in whatever we do. Finding it often enough inevitably leads to 'winning' in earthly terms, but it only comes into reach, when you rid yourself of the obsession with the end result. The shortcut to the Zone is to join the wimps, forget about winning and revel in the beauty of playing the game."- powerful (and great) writing from Clyde Brolin in his excellent book 'Overdrive: Formula One in the Zone' (web site www.overdrivef1.com)for dearest mom and dad, your spirits lives on (forever)thanks for everythingl
