Excerpt from The Younger Generation Public Library Copyright Among the empty sayings, which constitute at least half our stock of opinions, is this: that early youth is life's happiest time. On the contrary - setting aside exceptions - the age between, say, fifteen and twenty-five is probably that during which the majority of people suffer most. Not from this or that great sorrow, for such experiences usually come upon us in later years. But every young person who can both think and feel - and it is only to such that I speak - suffers during those years from the sorrows inherent in existence to a degree never reached in later life. Their elders seldom take the sufferings of the young seriously; they see in them the inevitable storms of the vernal equinox and rightly lay stress upon the great, the immeasurable good fortune of youth - that of having one's life before one. Reading Publishing And The Formation Of Literary Taste In England 1880 1914 written by Mary Hammond and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-05-15 with Literary Criticism categories.

Between 1880 and 1914, England saw the emergence of an unprecedented range of new literary forms from Modernism to the popular thriller. Not coincidentally, this period also marked the first overt references to an art/market divide through which books took on new significance as markers of taste and class. Though this division has received considerable attention relative to the narrative structures of the period's texts, little attention has been paid to the institutions and ideologies that largely determined a text's accessibility and circulated format and thus its mode of address to specific readerships. Hammond addresses this gap in scholarship, asking the following key questions: How did publishing and distribution practices influence reader choice? Who decided whether or not a book was a 'classic'? In a patriarchal, class-bound literary field, how were the symbolic positions of 'author' and 'reader' affected by the increasing numbers of women who not only bought and borrowed, but also wrote novels? Using hitherto unexamined archive material and focussing in detail on the working practices of publishers and distributors such as Oxford University Press and W.H. Smith and Sons, Hammond combines the methodologies of sociology, literary studies and book history to make an original and important contribution to our understanding of the cultural dynamics and rhetorics of the fin-de-siècle literary field in England.

Religion throughout its history has been used to justify dominance and rightness, a narrative that sadly continues today. St. Francis of Assisi, however, fell in love with a Christ who cultivated humility and connection rather than power and division. This Christ of humility and poverty—depicted by Ilia Delio, OSF, in this Franciscan classic—invites us to contemplate a theology that can heal the separation within ourselves and our divided world today.
