The goal of this book is to show the role of TikTok as a tool for political purposes. To this end, the authors analyse the messages posted on this social medium by political figures and institutions such as politicians and political parties, their impact on political landscapes, as well as the transformation of political communication techniques in order to suit the platform’s features. In the last two years, the exponential growth of TikTok has led an increasing number of politicians and institutions to incorporate it into their communication strategies. The platform displays some very different features from other social media that determine the way in which the content is presented. In addition, it manages to reach an audience that normally does not access or share political messages. Within this context, the volume pursues two main objectives. First, to examine how the communication techniques and the peculiarities of this social medium – where short videos with actors in informal attitudes prevail – affect the political message. A second objective is to analyse the influence of the messages distributed through TikTok that redefine political scenarios, and of the relationships of politicians and parties with voters. The core of the book comprises case studies that are organised into three parts, with nine chapters in all. The authors are scholars and practitioners of political communication, with diverse geographical representation, who approach the topics from a range of methodological perspectives. The first part addresses the state of the art and the influence of TikTok features on the way political communication is performed. The second part discusses the influence of TikTok on electoral scenarios and political culture in India, Bangladesh, the United States, and Ecuador. Finally, in the third part, TikTok is analysed as an instrument for promoting far right politicians and parties in Europe, as in the case of Matteo Salvini in Italy, and AfD in Germany and Vox in Spain. The volume is oriented to both scholars and communication professionals, such as journalists, communication consultants, and speechwriters, who want to become familiar with the platform, learn about its political impact, or wish to deepen their understanding of transformations in communication techniques and their adaptation to this growing social medium.

America is a nation divided. In recent years, levels of political polarization in the country have reached historical highs, threatening the nation's chance of unifying to meaningfully address the various large-scale issues it faces: an opioid crisis, exorbitant healthcare costs, and a yawning federal budget deficit, to name several. Interestingly, this divide has come at a time when Americans have an unprecedented ability to communicate with one another--by way of social media. Indeed, a body of literature indicates that social media has in fact contributed to America's polarized nature (Hawdon et al., 2020; Koiranen et at., 2019; Medina Serrano et al., 2020). This thesis seeks to add to that body of work, exploring how social media influences political polarization. Specifically, I examine how consuming political content on TikTok affects an individual's level of political extremism, as well as the difference in political extremism between TikTok users and non-TikTok users. Previous work on this topic has centered on more traditional social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook (Barberá, 2020; Banks et al., 2021; Cinelli et al., 2021; Yarchi et al., 2021). This study, therefore, seeks to provide an updated understanding of this topic by focusing on a newer platform, TikTok, which is soaring in popularity. Administering a survey to a student pool (N=231) at a large public university in the Northeast, I assessed how exposure to political content on TikTok affects one's political extremism. Respondents answered a series of questions designed to gauge the average amount of political content they were viewing on TikTok, as well as a series of issue-based political questions to determine the respondent's level of political extremism. The findings reveal that partisanship, age, race, and income are the most significant predictors of an individual's level of extremism, not their TikTok habits. Consistently, partisanship was the most significant predictor of extremism. These findings suggest that other factors are influencing political extremism in the United States and that social media may have less impact than previous research asserts. However, the limitations of this study call for additional research to be conducted to fully understand the relationship between social media and political polarization in the United States.

How politicians’ digital strategies appeal to the same fantasies of digital connection, access, and participation peddled by Silicon Valley. Smartphones and other digital devices seem to give us a direct line to politicians. But is interacting with presidential tweets really a manifestation of digital democracy? In Selfie Democracy, Elizabeth Losh examines the unintended consequences of politicians’ digital strategies, from the Obama campaign’s pioneering construction of an online community to Trump’s Twitter dominance. She finds that politicians who use digital media appeal to the same fantasies of digital connection, access, and participation peddled by Silicon Valley. Meanwhile, smartphones and social media don’t enable participatory democracy so much as they incentivize citizens to perform attention-getting acts of political expression. Losh explores presidential rhetoric casting digital media as tools of democracy, describes the conflation of gender and technology that contributed to Hillary Clinton’s defeat in 2016, chronicles the Biden campaign’s early digital stumbles in 2020, and recounts the TikTok campaign that may have spoiled a Trump rally. She shows that although Obama and Trump may seem diametrically opposed in both style and substance, they both used mobile digital media in ways that reshaped the presidency and promised a new kind of digital democracy. Obama used data and digital media to connect to citizens without intermediaries; Trump followed this strategy to its most extreme conclusion. What were the January 6 insurrectionists doing, as they livestreamed themselves and their cohorts attacking the Capitol, but practicing their own brand of selfie democracy?

Memes work as rhetorical weapons and discursive arguments in political conflicts. Across digital platforms, they confirm, contest and challenge political power and hierarchies. They simultaneously create social distortion, hostility, and a sense of community. Memes thus not only reflect norms but also work as a tool for negotiating them. At the same time, memes meld symbolic and cultural elements with technological functionalities, allowing for replicability and remixing.
