El periodo altomedieval está marcado por las grandes transformaciones socioeconómicas que generó el paso del mundo Antiguo al periodo medieval. Desde el punto de vista del conocimiento histórico es un momento oscuro o poco conocido, de ahí que este periodo se reconozca en la bibliografía como «época oscura». Este trabajo pretende dar luz al periodo histórico a través de una herramienta muy común en los estudios de arqueología: las producciones cerámicas y, en este caso, las del yacimiento arqueológico de El Tolmo de Minateda. El estudio de la cerámica se aborda desde un perspectiva contextual y estratigráfica, dos elementos que han permitido situar las producciones cerámicas dentro de un marco cronológico preciso y, por lo tanto, identificar las producciones que caracterizan el principio del siglo VII, respecto a las de su segunda mitad, así como reconocer con claridad cómo evoluciona el material cerámico a lo largo de los siglos VIII y IX en el caso de El Tolmo de Minateda. Gracias a la gran cantidad de información reunida ha sido posible estudiar unas producciones que, por su cronología, cuentan con pocos casos de estudio con los que compararlas. Por ello, la parte final del trabajo se ha utilizado no solo como espacio conclusivo, sino también como un lugar de debate de ideas y planteamiento de preguntas: ¿qué elementos caracterizan las cerámicas de los siglo VII, las del VIII o las del IX y cuales las diferencian?, ¿por qué llegan productos orientales de importación en la segunda mitad del siglo VIIi?, ¿cuándo se detectan los primeros elementos reconocidos como indicadores de islamización? o ¿cómo se reconoce el proceso de islamización social a través de la cerámica? Los argumentos que se plantean en este libro ayudan a reconocer la cerámica de época altomedieval y su evolución, pero también a ver la huella de una sociedad que plasmó sus necesidades, usos y costumbres en estos simples objetos, y que ahora nos permiten reconstruir, en cierta manera, la historia de estas gentes.

This volume is dedicated to eliciting the interactions between localities across late antique and early medieval Europe and the wider Mediterranean. Significant research has been done in recent years to explore how late "Roman" and post-"Roman" cities, towns and other localities communicated vis-à-vis larger structural phenomena, such as provinces, empires, kingdoms, institutions and so on. This research has contributed considerably to our understanding of the place of the city in its context, but tends to portray the city as a necessarily subordinate conduit within larger structures, rather than an entity in itself, or as a hermeneutical object of enquiry. Consequently, not enough research has been committed to examining how local people and communities thought about, engaged with, and struggled against nearby or distant urban neighbors.Urban Interactions addresses this lacuna in urban history by presenting articles that apply a diverse spectrum of approaches, from archaeological investigation to critical analyses of historiographical and historical biases and developmental consideration of antagonisms between ecclesiastical centers. Through these avenues of investigation, this volume elucidates the relationship between the urban centers and their immediate hinterlands and neighboring cities with which they might vie or collaborate. This entanglement and competition, whether subterraneous or explicit across overarching political, religious or other macro categories, is evaluated through a broad geographical range of late "Roman" provinces and post-"Roman" states to maintain an expansive perspective of developmental trends within and about the city.
