Niemandsland ist das Gebiet zwischen feindlichen Linien, unerforschtes, herrenloses Terrain. So steht es im Wörterbuch. Für das Metier der Malerei wird dieses Niemandsland in der vorliegenden Abhandlung bildlich zum Standort, für die Maler zur Kolonie: Eine Ecke, die nirgendwo dazugehören soll, nicht einmal mehr zur Kunst, und die keiner will. Unnotwendig, veraltet, obsolet. Malerei, bloss Bilder, damit kann man doch heutzutage nichts mehr anfangen. Aus dieser Position heraus entwickelt Marion Elias eine skeptische Intervention zum üblich gewordenen, theoretisch-überfrachteten Regelkanon der kontemporären bildenden Kunst. Blickwinkel dabei bleibt das Atelierfenster, der Standpunkt ist der einer Fragenden, einer Bildermacherin, die gerne auf den Ausdruck "Künstler" verzichtet und auf der geschlechtslosen Version "Maler" ohne -in besteht. Die Autorin zerlegt in konsequenter Beweisführung jene (behaupteten) Normen, über die eine mainstreamprägende Fachwelt zu zementieren versucht, was denn Kunst wäre, was sie darf und soll. Mutig und pointiert erteilt Elias der eingespielten Phraseologie, der Schlampigkeit der Begriffe und Inhalte, dem Pathos einer nicht kunstimmanenten und somit keineswegs verpflichtenden Aufgabenserie eindeutige Absagen. Der offene Bogen an Argumentationen spannt sich dabei von der Renaissance bis ins Heute und entkräftet wenigstens zwei "Leitsätze": den der Marginalisierung der Malerei sowie den der Diskriminierung des Ästhetischen. Wenn Kunst etwas nicht sein sollte - dann - durchschnittlich.
