Galeno se consideraba tanto filósofo y filólogo como médico. Este volumen reúne textos de las dos primeras vertientes, en los que muestra su brillante versatilidad y su honda sabiduría. Galeno –junto con Hipócrates el principal médico de la Antigüedad– nació en Pérgamo en 129-130 d.C., de familia acaudalada. Estudió en Esmirna y Alejandría (anatomía y fisiología). Tras ejercer tres o cuatro años la medicina en la escuela de gladiadores de Esmirna, a partir de 162 se instaló en Roma, donde sería el médico de Marco Aurelio y su hijo Cómodo, entre otras personalidades de la corte imperial. Fue uno de los escritores griegos más prolíficos de su época. Murió en Roma en el año 200. Su influencia en el mundo bizantino, en Oriente y en la Edad Media occidental es enorme, y es sin duda uno de los grandes médicos de la historia. En este volumen se reúnen escritos de Galeno sobre temas diversos, pero que tienen en común no ser obras técnicas de medicina. Hay que recordar que Galeno –que recibió una educación muy esmerada, pues estudió filosofía, arquitectura, astronomía y agricultura– se interesó por una gran variedad de materias, y que se consideraba a sí mismo tanto filósofo y filólogo como médico. "Exhortación a la medicina", "Que el mejor médico es también filósofo" y "Sobre las escuelas de medicina" son obras deontológicas que muestran la concepción que tenía Galeno del médico y la medicina, en absoluto ajenas a los saberes abstractos. "Sobre mis libros, "Sobre el orden de mis libros" y "Sobre el pronóstico" tienen carácter autobiográfico y abundan en acontecimientos y experiencias personales del médico de Pérgamo; además cumplen la función de preparar un registro de las obras auténticas de Galeno, cuya enorme fama había motivado la atribución errónea de multitud de escritos. "Sobre mis propias opiniones" y "Sobre la mejor doctrina" son una muestra de las ideas filosóficas de nuestro autor. Por último, "Sobre los sofismas del lenguaje", refleja el interés de Galeno por la filología, la lógica y su exigencia de una terminología precisa.
