This book explores the latest research and practical data on the clinical management of influenza. Starting with the definition, epidemiology and pathogenesis, the first part reviews the basic science of the influenza virus and infection. The next three parts then discusses the diagnosis, complications and management, providing practical data and insights that are useful in day-to-day patient care. The last part focuses on the trending topics, including a new drug, oral baloxavir marboxil, which was introduced in Japan in 2018 and is the first polymerase inhibitor to be licensed for the treatment of uncomplicated influenza. In Japan, since the medical insurance system is well-established, patients receive medical examinations quickly after the onset of influenza viral infection, making it easy to implement early diagnostic tools and early treatment. Providing practical data and insights, Influenza - Advances in Diagnosis and Management is a useful resource for clinicians, residents and trainees around the globe.

The Flu - A Guide to the Symptoms and Treatment of Influenza. Flu is a respiratory infection caused by a number of viruses. The viruses pass through the air and enter your body through your nose or mouth. Between 5% and 20% of people in the U.S. get the flu each year. The flu can be serious or even deadly for elderly people, newborn babies, and people with certain chronic illnesses. Symptoms of the flu come on suddenly and are worse than those of the common cold. They may include: Body or muscle aches, Chills, Cough, Fever, Headache, Sore throat. Is it a cold or the flu? Colds rarely cause a fever or headaches. Flu almost never causes an upset stomach. And "stomach flu" isn't really flu at all, but gastroenteritis. Most people with the flu recover on their own without medical care. People with mild cases of the flu should stay home and avoid contact with others, except to get medical care. If you get the flu, your health care provider may prescribe medicine to help your body fight the infection and lessen symptoms.

In the Northern Hemisphere, seasonal influenza epidemics usually occur during the winter (”the flu season”) with the peak typically around January and February. At-risk groups should be vaccinated annually well in advance (October–November) before the start of the expected influenza epidemic. National public health organizations issue recommendations of groups to whom annual influenza vaccination should be offered (possibly free of charge), i.e. of individuals whose health would be essentially threatened by influenza or who would gain significant health benefit from influenza vaccination. Influenza can be diagnosed on the basis of the clinical presentation combined with a confirmed epidemic circulating in the community, or on the basis of virological (rapid) diagnostic test results. The treatment of influenza in a healthy adult patient is generally symptomatic. Antiviral agents should be considered for children, pregnant women, patients with exceptionally severe symptoms and those belonging to at-risk groups. The sooner the drug therapy is started, the better the effect. Treatment should be started within 48 hours of symptom onset.
