In the winter of 1978, an extensive archaeological campaign was launched in the Hamrin Basin area in the east-central part of Iraq to salvage many archaeological sites before their flooding, due to the construction of a large dam. This volume documents the excavations carried out in two of the sites-Tell Abada and Tell Rashid-dating back to the Ubaid period in the fifth millennium BC. The first site (Tell Abada) is of particular importance; it is an almost complete village with three occupational levels unearthed. Several residential houses and buildings with distinctive architectural features are exposed. Industrial workshops dedicated to the manufacture of pottery vessels are present. Of express interest was the first-time discovery of pottery-making equipment, notably the potter's wheel. An equally exciting discovery is the presence of many fire installations dedicated to pottery vessels' ?burning. The pottery products are enormous, varied, and richly decorated, reflecting aesthetic features and agility. The presence of the pottery in a very well stratified sequence enhances our understanding of Ubaid pottery, clarifies its chronological classifications, and establishes cultural links with other Ubaid sites in the region. Among other remarkable discoveries are many infant burial urns, granaries, water ducts, and proto-tablets. The varied aspects of the cultural material revealed throughout the excavations provides significant insight into daily life, settlement patterns, craft specialization, religious practices, and socioeconomic status, and sheds new light on the Ubaid period in general in Mesopotamia.

The time period between the end of the Ubaid and the beginning of the Uruk expansion is one of the least known, yet most important eras in the ancient history of the Middle East. This era, which is often referred to as the "Post-Ubaid" period, is marked by major structural changes such as the rise of social hierarchies, technological innovations and economic reorganisation, which eventually led to the emergence of proto-states and cities. The recent finding of "Post-Ubaid-related" sites in regions deemed to be located far beyond the Ubaid purview, such as Cilicia, Cappadocia or the south Caucasus, has added another dimension to this picture: these sites suggest that the organic relationships more or less implicitly established between the "Post-Ubaid horizon" and the Ubaid world may in fact be much weaker than once thought.

Tell al-'Abr was excavated in the frame of the salvage excavations carried out during the building of the Teshreen dam on the upper Euphrates valley in the north of Syria. A Syrian team, directed by Hamido Hammade, excavated the site during five seasons between 1989 and 1993. The volume is the final excavation report. It contains the publication of all archaeological discoveries and chapters concerning the laboratory analysis. Because of the richness of the results, Tell al-'Abr could be considered now as an important reference site for the Ubaid period in Syria.

Mohan, Shobha, and I are fast friends. Perhaps that is why they have been branded as ‘Fevicol friends.’ To be honest, the last four years during our graduation, they were more like family to me than friends. We could not have left him alone in his quest to know to investigate this mysterious guy. After all, we are friends through thick and thin. A small suspicion of Mohan’s overworked mind has put us all on a path that will eventually change our lives and the lives of everyone around us. We were happy that we were serving our country, India, my first valentine, that has suffered from the enemies who are inside her territory like termites and trying everything to devour it. The Indian forces are doing all in their hands to protect our beloved motherland, and without wearing the uniforms, fate has given us a golden chance to serve our nation in some unanticipated circumstances. We would not have thought that a small mere hunch of Mohan will put us on the path that would make us most unlikely heroes. Not realising what was in store for us, ultimately, we helped the agencies crack one of the most compelling cases in Indian intelligence in recent times. I feel like quoting my favourite quote from the movie THE IMITATION GAME, “We have a lot more unlikely heroes now, it’s not just the guy with the guns, but the guy with the brains.” Thank you, Mohan, for making us those heroes and Shobha for being there with us through and through.
