In Transatlantic Fascism, Federico Finchelstein traces the intellectual and cultural connections between Argentine and Italian fascisms, showing how fascism circulates transnationally. From the early 1920s well into the Second World War, Mussolini tried to export Italian fascism to Argentina, the “most Italian” country outside of Italy. (Nearly half the country’s population was of Italian descent.) Drawing on extensive archival research on both sides of the Atlantic, Finchelstein examines Italy’s efforts to promote fascism in Argentina by distributing bribes, sending emissaries, and disseminating propaganda through film, radio, and print. He investigates how Argentina’s political culture was in turn transformed as Italian fascism was appropriated, reinterpreted, and resisted by the state and the mainstream press, as well as by the Left, the Right, and the radical Right. As Finchelstein explains, nacionalismo, the right-wing ideology that developed in Argentina, was not the wholesale imitation of Italian fascism that Mussolini wished it to be. Argentine nacionalistas conflated Catholicism and fascism, making the bold claim that their movement had a central place in God’s designs for their country. Finchelstein explores the fraught efforts of nationalistas to develop a “sacred” ideological doctrine and political program, and he scrutinizes their debates about Nazism, the Spanish Civil War, imperialism, anti-Semitism, and anticommunism. Transatlantic Fascism shows how right-wing groups constructed a distinctive Argentine fascism by appropriating some elements of the Italian model and rejecting others. It reveals the specifically local ways that a global ideology such as fascism crossed national borders.

A curiosidade pelas dinâmicas do mal, a sensibilidade para com as manifestações estéticas de determinadas ideias, a perspicácia da análise dos acontecimentos políticos internacionais e a agradabilidade da prosa, todas presentes nas obras anteriores de Dalrymple, agora se concentram em Viagens aos Confins do Comunismo, que se prova uma leitura imperdível tanto para os interessados em política como para os apreciadores de boa literatura não-ficcional. Este diário de viagens remete a cinco países – Albânia, Coreia do Norte, Romênia, Vietnã e Cuba –, em todos os quais a ditadura comunista se mantinha em pé mesmo enquanto em outros lugares do mundo ela começava a ruir. Até nisto se revela o interesse de um cientista do comportamento, como o é Dalrymple: o que a ele fascinava era "a morte de modos de viver". Em alguns dos países por que ele passou, pouco depois o comunismo entrou em crise e faliu; em todo caso, quando de sua visita, ele pôde observar crenças e atitudes àquela altura já transformadas em automatismos pelos indivíduos que viviam sob a ditadura. Nisto, seu olhar crítico – e, mais ainda, de psiquiatra – é capaz de notar traços profundos, ainda que nada evidentes, da vida sob o comunismo, revelados inclusive pelas banalidades do cotidiano. Dalrymple observa, por exemplo, como o medo permanente das pessoas as impedia até de parar de bater palmas quando havia algum aplauso público: todos temiam parecer traidores e, apenas por isso, os aplausos eram sempre demorados. As cidades, em sua arquitetura, também diziam muito sobre o regime: os prédios eram sempre monocromáticos, e suas colunas, largas, em um elogio feio e bruto ao poder nu. Os líderes se impunham como figuras sobre-humanas, e Dalrymple aponta como isso era simbolizado nos discursos, na propaganda, nos museus. Mas as visitas ensinaram não apenas sobre os habitantes daqueles países, suas cidades e seus líderes – ensinaram também sobre o próprio visitante, sobre o seu mundo e sobre os seus concidadãos. A visão da farsa e da injustiça totalitárias causava enorme indignação, mas nesses momentos Dalrymple nada podia fazer além de se calar – algo que o apequenava como humano e tornava a ele, como a qualquer outro simples turista, um cúmplice involuntário do regime. O achatamento dos indivíduos é constante sob o Estado comunista, mas Dalrymple não deixa de notar que algo semelhante ocorre no mundo livre quando somos feitos impotentes diante de grandes empresas e corporações; ou quando uma censura branda das ideias faz com que só possamos assumir certas opiniões secretamente, em uma condição de paranoia semelhante à dos cidadãos que eram oprimidos pelo comunismo. É por isso que Dalrymple apresenta o seu relato como um "aviso". E como uma injeção de realismo recomendável aos seus colegas, isto é, aos intelectuais: vários deles, sendo de esquerda, ao ouvirem os relatos de Dalrymple, reagiam relativizando as atrocidades do comunismo por compará-las com alguma injustiça pontual do Ocidente. Esses intelectuais, confortavelmente instalados no Ocidente, desejavam ter utopias, mas preferiam que elas fossem executadas bem longe deles, em outros lugares. Este livro traz o submundo comunista para perto de nós, e é por isso que não se pode ficar indiferente à sua leitura.

Teodoro Petkoff and the other members of the Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS) in Venezuela had aroused the ire of the orthodox communist leaders by claiming to be both authentic communists and true nationalists, not bound by the dictates of either the Moscow or Maoist/Beijing wings of the party. To infuriate the traditionalists even further, Petkoff and his associates succeeded in being more than isolated critics, as MAS quickly eclipsed the traditional Venezuelan Communist Party and became that country's leading leftist group. The author places MAS in its international national, and historical contexts in order to determine the extent to which it is a unique communist party, as it claims to be. He traces the theory of "national democratic revolution, " which MAS rejects, back to Lenin, and discusses the Latin American left's reevaluation of that thesis. Ellner examines the guerrilla movement in Venezuela, the student movement of the late 1960s, and the emergence of the "New Left" in other countries, especially noting their influence on the formation of MAS. He also discusses the group's role in Venezuelan elections and it's relations with the other parties.
