The Roman orientation was the keystone of the religious revolution of the Catholic revival. New or renewed congregations, priests close to the people & militant laymen gave a decidedly social & activist turn to the faith. Over time, the Vatican would exert a powerful impact on the shape of modern politics in Belgium. The special relationship between Belgium & Rome was no one-way traffic. From a somewhat curious ecclesiastical court hopelessly entangled in the old spider web of the Papal States, the papacy became the institution we know today, the leader of a "modern" Catholic opinion. Belgium played a role of major importance in this transformation. The central theme of the book can therefore be defined as a process of mutual integration, if not acculturation, across the Alps.

Tous les jeunes couples d'aujourd'hui engagés dans une relation sérieuse se posent à un moment donné de leur parcours ce type de questions. Mais, se sont-ils un jour demandé d'où proviennent ces rites si courants et si bien implantés dans notre culture occidentale ? Le mariage, ainsi que la nuit de noces et le voyage de noces qui en découlent, sont en fait des rites qui prennent leur source il y a plusieurs siècles, dans un cadre social et culturel bien particulier. C'est cette origine et toutes ses implications qui occupent le questionnement de cet essai. L'histoire de ces rites est ici replacée dans un contexte qui tente d'englober l'histoire de la bourgeoisie, de la sexualité, des femmes, du genre et du tourisme, des XIXe et XXe siècles, et qui concerne une élite francophone, voire francophile, de l'époque. La première partie est axée sur la sexualité et se penche plus particulièrement sur la nuit de noces. La seconde moitié de l'essai est entièrement consacrée au voyage de noces et se concentre, d'une part, sur sa composante sexuelle et, d'autre part, sur ses liens avec l'émergence de la pratique touristique. Cet essai se clôture par un questionnement sur la particularité du voyage de noces et des « noceurs », par rapport au tourisme et aux touristes en général. À PROPOS DE L'AUTEURE Sara Tavares Gouveia (Uccle, 1987) est titulaire d'un master en Histoire contemporaine à finalité didactique de l'Université Libre de Bruxelles. Son mémoire, Regards sur deux rites de la vie privée bourgeoise : La nuit de noces et le voyage de noces en Belgique de 1820 à 1936, a été récompensé par le prix Suzanne Tassier en 2010. Elle est actuellement historienne-archiviste-formatrice au CARHOP.
