"The straight punch is the core of Jeet Kune Do."—Bruce Lee The straight lead was a key element in Bruce Lee's development of his own personal style. It was designed to be uncomplicated, economical, and brutally effective but is not as simple as it might seem. Bruce Lee once described it the most difficult move in the Jeet Kune Do arsenal. Lee developed JKD as a response to the shortcomings he found in traditional martial arts, but it also includes elements of Western combat systems that he found effective. It incorporates contributions ranging from Jack Dempsey's approach to boxing to the fencing style of Aldo Nadi. In The Straight Lead: The Core of Bruce Lee's Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do, author Teri Tom describes the development of the straight punch in Western martial arts and describes Bruce Lee's refinement of the technique. It also offers a thorough instruction in the complexity and power of the move—showing martial artists of any discipline how to incorporate this devastating attack into their repertoire. With forewords by Shannon Lee Keasler and Ted Wong, chapters include: A Brief History of Straight Punching Evolution of Jeet Kune Do's Straight Lead The Stance Mechanics of the Straight Lead Footwork Why the Straight Lead? Application Speed Variations of the Straight Punch What Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do is Not Go to the Source An Interview with Ted Wong

Group Theory In Chemistry And Spectroscopy written by Boris S. Tsukerblat and has been published by Courier Corporation this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-08-18 with Science categories.

This handbook on group theory is geared toward chemists and experimental physicists who use spectroscopy and require knowledge of the electronic structures of the materials they investigate. Accessible to undergraduate students, it takes an elementary approach to many of the key concepts. Rather than the deductive method common to books on mathematics and theoretical physics, the present volume introduces fundamental concepts with simple examples, relating them to specific chemical and physical problems. The text is centered on detailed analysis of examples. Since neither chemists nor spectroscopists require theorem proofs, very few appear here. Instead, the focus remains on the principal conclusions, their meaning, and their use. In keeping with the text's practical bias, the main results of group theory are presented in all sections as procedures, making possible their systematic and step-by-step-application. Each chapter contains problems that develop practical skill and provide a valuable supplement to the text.

an integrated approach to electron transfer phenomena This two-part stand-alone volume in the prestigious Advances in Chemical Physics series provides the most comprehensive overview of electron transfer science today. It draws on cutting-edge research from diverse areas of chemistry, physics, and biology-covering the most recent developments in the field, and pointing to important future trends. This initial volume includes: * A historical perspective spanning five decades * A review of concepts, problems, and ideas in current research * Electron transfer in isolated molecules and in clusters * General theory, including useful algorithms * Spectra and electron transfer kinetics in bridged compounds The second volume covers solvent control, ultrafast electron transfer and coherence effects, molecular electronics, electron transfer and chemistry, and biomolecules. Electron transfer science has seen tremendous progress in recent years. Technological innovations, most notably the advent of femtosecond lasers, now permit the real-time investigation of intramolecular and intermolecular electron transfer processes on a time scale of nuclear motion. New scientific information abounds, illuminating the processes of energy acquisition, storage, and disposal in large molecules, clusters, condensed phase, and biophysical systems. Electron Transfer: From Isolated Molecules to Biomolecules is the first book devoted to the exciting work being done in nonradiative electron transfer dynamics today. This two-part edited volume emphasizes the interdisciplinary nature of the field, bringing together the contributions of pioneers in chemistry, physics, and biology. Both theoretical and experimental topics are featured. The authors describe modern approaches to the exploration of different systems, including supersonic beam techniques, femtosecond laser spectroscopy, chemical syntheses, and methods in genetic and chemical engineering. They examine applications in such areas as supersonic jets, solvents, electrodes, semi- conductors, respiratory and enzymatic protein systems, photosynthesis, and more. They also relate electron transfer and radiationless transitions theory to pertinent physical phenomena, and provide a conceptual framework for the different processes. Complete with over two hundred illustrations, Part One reviews developments in the field since its inception fifty years ago, and discusses electron transfer phenomena in both isolated molecules and in clusters. It outlines the general theory, exploring areas of the control of kinetics, structure-function relationships, fluctuations, coherence, and coupling to solvents with complex spectral density in different types of electron transfer processes. Timely, comprehensive, and authoritative, Electron Transfer: From Isolated Molecules to Biomolecules is an essential resource for physical chemists, molecular physicists, and researchers working in nonradiative dynamics today.

A “funny, moving, endlessly inventive” novel of life in a Trinidadian town during a time of change and revolutionary fervor (The Times). In Trinidad, in the wake of 1970’s Black Power Uprising, we follow Sonnyboy, Singer King Kala, and their town’s folk through experiments in music, politics, religion, and love—and in their day-to-day adventures. Humorous and serious, sad and uplifting, Is Just a Movie is a radiant novel about small moments of magic in ordinary life. “Earl Lovelace is arguably the Caribbean’s greatest living novelist. In Is Just a Movie, he writes at the top of his considerable literary powers, picturing the Caribbean’s poor and powerless defending their ever-embattled humanity with resourcefulness and tenacity.” —Randall Robinson, author of The Debt: What America Owes to Blacks “Lovelace is bursting with things to say about this complex, heterogeneous society in the late twentieth century . . . with a flair that at its best reaches a soaring rhapsody.” —Guardian “Is Just a Movie is not just a movie, it’s a poem, too.” —Arundhati Roy, author of The God of Small Things “Confirms Lovelace as a master storyteller of the West Indies.” —Financial Times “Starring two hapless almost-beens in search of movie fame, Is Just A Movie takes us on wild loving absurdist journey to the heart of a contemporary Trinidad.” —Junot Díaz, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao “Vivid prose that seems to stroll effortlessly across the page.” —The Times Literary Supplement Winner of the Regional Council of Guadeloupe’s Grand Prize for Caribbean Literature

During August 24-27, 1993, approximately 60 scientists from the Americas, Europe and Japan, gathered in the city of Guanajuato, in the state of Guanajuato, Mexico, at the II Latin American Workshop on Magnetism, Magnetic Materials and their Applications. The group of scientists converging into the beautiful city of Guanajuato had come from Argentina, Chile, Brazil, Venezuela, Cuba, several places in Mexico, U. S. A. , Japan, Spain, France, Italy, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Denmark. The event attested to the success of the previous Workshop on Magnetism, Magnetic Materials and their Applications, held in Havana, Cuba, in 1991, as well as to the interest, level of activity and quality of the work being carried out in Latin America in the area of magnetism and magnetic materials. Equally important to everyone present was the fact that we had come to honor a friend, Professor L. M. Falicov, on his sixtieth birthday. The choice of a Latin American Workshop on magnetism as a Festschrift for Leo Falicov was, in our opinion, quite appropriate not only because of Leo's strong ties to Latin America, but also because of his superb contributions to science, and in particular, to magnetism. Professor Falicov was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where he spent a good part of his formative years.

This brief provides an overview of theoretical research in organic ferromagnetic material design using quantum chemical approaches based on molecular orbital theory from primary Hückel to ab initio levels of theory. Most of the content describes the authors’ approach to identify simple and efficient guidelines for magnetic design, which have not been described in other books. Individual chapters cover quantum chemistry methods that may be used to find hydrocarbon systems with degenerate non-bonding molecular orbitals that interact with each other, to identify high-spin-preferred systems using an analytical index that allows for simple design of high-spin systems as well as to analyze the effect of high-spin stability through orbital interactions. The extension of these methods to large systems is discussed. This book is a valuable resource for students and researchers who are interested in quantum chemistry related to magnetic property.
