Qu'est-ce que la liberté ? Cet ouvrage propose de discuter précisément de cette question au cœur de l'œuvre philosophique et politique de Hannah Arendt. Contrairement à la philosophie politique contemporaine qui réduit la pensée de Hannah Arendt à une réflexion sur la théorie du jugement esthétique kantien ou la rattache au courant politique conservateur, l'auteur démontre que la fécondité de la pensée de la philosophe se trouve dans une réflexion originale sur le concept de liberté. Il soutient la thèse selon laquelle H. Arendt développe une double théorie de la liberté : la liberté de penser et la liberté politique. Irréductible à une instrumentalisation de la pensée et à une identification de la liberté d'agir à la domination, la liberté arendtienne ne consiste pas seulement à penser en termes politiques et à fonder un corps politique ; elle poursuit aussi des objectifs plus « modestes » : résister à l'oppression, soulever l'opinion publique, etc. Le concept de la liberté est en quelque sorte la matrice du politique chez H. Arendt. L'activité de penser est libre dans la mesure où elle se distingue du processus réflexif qui conduit à la connaissance, tandis que la liberté politique émerge des expériences anciennes et modernes dans lesquelles le pouvoir réfute la domination. De la théorie politique de H. Arendt se dégage en dernier ressort la question suivante : la liberté des Modernes est-elle politique ?

Yet the possibilities of novelistic form and literary exegesis exceed the secularizing tendencies of contemporary literary criticism. Showing how the Qurʾan itself invites and enacts critical reading, Hoda El Shakry’s Qurʾanic model of narratology enriches our understanding of literary sensibilities and practices in the Maghreb across Arabophone and Francophone traditions. The Literary Qurʾan mobilizes the Qurʾan’s formal, narrative, and rhetorical qualities, alongside embodied and hermeneutical forms of Qurʾanic pedagogy, to theorize modern Maghrebi literature. Challenging the canonization of secular modes of reading that occlude religious epistemes, practices, and intertexts, it attends to literature as a site where the process of entextualization obscures ethical imperatives. Engaging with the Arab-Islamic tradition of adab—a concept demarcating the genre of belles lettres, as well as social and moral comportment—El Shakry demonstrates how the critical pursuit of knowledge is inseparable from the spiritual cultivation of the self. Foregrounding form and praxis alike, The Literary Qurʾan stages a series of pairings that invite paratactic readings across texts, languages, and literary canons. The book places twentieth-century novels by canonical Francophone writers (Abdelwahab Meddeb, Assia Djebar, Driss Chraïbi) into conversation with lesser-known Arabophone ones (Maḥmūd al-Masʿadī, al-Ṭāhir Waṭṭār, Muḥammad Barrāda). Theorizing the Qurʾan as a literary object, process, and model, this interdisciplinary study blends literary and theological methodologies, conceptual vocabularies, and reading practices.

Du moins peut-on déjà en esquisser les prolégomènes : le mal, la liberté, l'éblouissement, la croisée des regards, la crise, l'absence. Et, dès ces préparations, l'amour impose déjà son autre nom - charité.

The author draws upon the methodologies of theater and cultural studies to examine the construction of "the Orient" on the Parisian stage during the nineteenth century, the period of France's first imperial expansions into North Africa and the Middle East. As an increasingly large segment of the French population moved into contact with the Middle East and North Africa as soldiers, colonial administrators, settlers, and merchants, the balance between fantasy and immediacy in Orientalized drama shifted. The domestic melodrama gave way to elaborately staged military spectacles based on current events. Performed before working-class audiences, many of whose members were to be called up for military service, these spectacles bore explicit political and imperial agendas. Mining rich archival resources of play-texts, censorship reports, critical reviews, and contemporary writings on performance practice, this book reveals the complex processes by which the institutions of popular culture helped shape nineteenth-century notions of race, ethnicity, and nationality.
