Ciudades a pie es una etnografía sobre un proceso de urbanización en dos barrios de extracción popular del norte del Gran Buenos Aires que pone la mirada en las personas que son objeto de las políticas públicas de reordenamiento territorial que pretenden mejorar sus condiciones de vida. Enfocada en las tensiones entre la política de la vida cotidiana y la implementación de las políticas públicas, el trabajo recupera la cotidianeidad de los barrios dando cuenta de las prácticas y sentidos que los pobladores y diversos sujetos con presencia en los barrios construyen en relación a los procesos de transformación urbana. La investigación hace un aporte original al incluir a los niños, un grupo pocas veces considerado en este tipo de estudios y usualmente desestimado por aquellos que piensan las ciudades. El análisis incorpora formas inéditas de organizar el espacio vivido a través de prácticas cotidianas como al caminar, al imaginar, en el juego, a través de los recuerdos. Muestra, por ejemplo, que donde algunas personas advierten espacios "vacíos", otras ven espacios de diversión con amigos, donde unos ven "basura" o "peligro", otros ven peces de colores, o los asocian con seres queridos, describiendo no sólo espacios físicos, sino también espacios imaginados, deseados, recordados. La etnografía se sustenta en el trabajo de campo con niños y adultos, y en la implicancia de la autora como técnica en dos programas de mejoramiento barrial. El libro describe los procesos de urbanización tanto a partir de las relaciones de cooperación como a partir de las relaciones de conflicto, reflexiona sobre el modelo de ciudad que reproduce formas de exclusión socio-espacial, y discute concepciones como "pobreza urbana" poniendo en evidencia las falencias de este término para explicar la complejidad de los asuntos urbanos e invisibilizar la participación de los ciudadanos en la construcción de las ciudades.
