When I consider and mentally review my remembrance of Octavius, my excellent and most faithful companion, the sweetness and charm of the man so clings to me, that I appear to myself in some sort as if I were returning to past times, and not merely recalling in my recollection things which have long since happened and gone by. Thus, in the degree in which the actual contemplation of him is withdrawn from my eyes, it is bound up in my heart and in my most intimate feelings. And it was not without reason that that remarkable and holy man, when he departed this life, left to me an unbounded regret for him, especially since he himself also glowed with such a love for me at all times, that, whether in matters of amusement or of business, he agreed with me in similarity of will, in either liking or disliking the same things. Trois romains vont à Ostie pour se baigner et se reposer. Marcus Minucius Felix, avocat, converti au christianisme, a invité ses amis Octave (Octavius), chrétien lui aussi, et Cecilius. En cours de route, Cecilius embrasse une statue d’une divinité, et Octave en fait le reproche à son ami Marcus : « Ce n’est pas bien de laisser son ami dans l’erreur » et de le regarder embrasser de fausses divinités sans l’aider à rechercher la vérité. Cecilius est touché par cette remarque, et déclare qu’il est assez grand pour se faire une idée, seul, de ce qui doit être crû, ou non. Cecilius demande donc à Marcus de se faire le juge impartial entre lui et Octave ; commence alors une « joute verbale », au cours de laquelle Cecilius va expliquer pourquoi il n’est pas devenu chrétien et continue à croire dans les divinités romaines ; puis Octave va lui répondre, et celui qui aura le mieux parlé sera déclaré vainqueur. Une façon agréable de présenter le christianisme, en exposant puis en réfutant les idées fausses véhiculées dans les premiers siècles, à Rome, sur cette religion.
