Up from Slavery: Large Print by Booker T. Washington The first time that I went to Tuskegee I was asked to make an address to the school on Sunday evening. I sat upon the platform of the large chapel and looked forth on a thousand coloured faces, and the choir of a hundred or more behind me sang a familiar religious melody, and the whole company joined in the chorus with unction. I was the only white man under the roof, and the scene and the songs made an impression on me that I shall never forget. Mr. Washington arose and asked them to sing one after another of the old melodies that I had heard all my life; but I had never before heard them sung by a thousand voices nor by the voices of educated Negroes. I had associated them with the Negro of the past, not with the Negro who was struggling upward. They brought to my mind the plantation, the cabin, the slave, not the freedman in quest of education. But on the plantation and in the cabin th We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. """Written by classic English author Rudyard Kipling, Just So Stories is considered not only a quintessential children's book, but one of Kipling's best works. Just So Stories is a collection of origin stories, fictional tales that explain why animals have certain characteristics and other themes akin to that. Kipling's book features stories such as "How the Whale Got His Throat," or why large whales eat small prey, and "How the Alphabet Was Made," which details a young girl and her father inventing an alphabet. Beautifully written and packed-full of illustrations, Just So Stories is the perfect combination of education and fun to get kids to love reading. This edition from the original edition, which was published in 1902 and was illustrated by Rudyard Kipling, himself. Even the cover of this edition reflects the first edition of """"Just So Stories."""" Some very minor updates were required due to modern printing methods, but in the main, this is the closest the reader can get to the original edition just as Kipling wrote it, without having an actual first edition book in one's hand."""

Booker T. Washington wrote Up From Slavery as a central part of his strategy for the equality of both Native and African Americans. Its title is not just a description of his own life but an exhortation to the reader. His philosophy of self improvement through education resonated so strongly with the society of the time that even early reviews recommended the book as strongly for white people as for black, a judgment which still holds today. Slavery itself was actually a relatively short part of Washington's life, and the same is true of the book. The effects are fascinating however, for example the young Booker did not even know his own age. From the third chapter the focus is on Washington's rise from slavery, with a great focus on education and educational projects. Critics consider Washington to have been too timid in his search for equality and too full of egotism in the writing of this book, but there is no doubt that he was an important figure in the early civil rights movement and many have found inspiration in his words. No matter your race or class this is an inspirational text and should be considered required reading for any American, or indeed anyone with an interest in civil rights. "Booker T. Washington (April 18, 1856 - November 14, 1915) was an African American educator, leader, author and orator and was an adviser to several US presidents. He was born into slavery on a plantation in Virginia, remembering"I cannot recall a single instance during my childhood or early boyhood when our entire family sat down to the table together. On the plantation in Virginia, and even later, meals were gotten to the children very much as dumb animals get theirs... a piece of bread here and a scrap of meat there."He was nine when his family gained their emancipation and he describes the rejoicing and the apprehension as freed slaves entered a new life. His mother took the family to the free state of West Virginia. The only name he had known was "Booker," but at school, when first asked his name by the teacher, he coolly added "Washington" to be like the other children who had at least two names. This established him on a path of fitting into the white world. In the course of his life he established the Tuskegee Institute, now Tuskegee University, helped found the National Negro Business League, now eclipsed by the NAACP, and advised several US presidents. Between 1890 and 1915, Washington was the dominant leader in the African American community and of the contemporary Black elite. He established a powerful political and financial network to advance the cause of African Americans through education and business known as the Tuskegee Machine.Up from Slavery chronicles Washington's life from slave to schoolmaster to statesman. It was a best seller when published and for many years thereafter. In it he writes"The temptations to enter political life were so alluring that I came very near yielding to them at one time, but I was kept from doing so by the feeling that I would be helping in a more substantial way ... through a generous education of the hand, head, and heart.""
