The Cambridge Book of Magic is an edition of a hitherto unpublished sixteenth-century manuscript of necromancy (ritual magic), now in Cambridge University Library. Written in England between 1532 and 1558, the manuscript consists of 91 'experiments', most of them involving the conjuration of angels and demons, for purposes as diverse as knowing the future, inflicting bodily harm, and recovering stolen property. However, the author's interests went beyond spirit conjuration to include a variety of forms of natural magic. The treatise drew on astrological image magic and magico-medical texts, and the author had a particular fascination with the properties of plants and herbs. The Cambridge Book of Magic gives an insight into the practice and thought of one sixteenth-century magician, who may have been acting on behalf of clients as well as working for his own benefit.

Tusculan Disputations Ii V written by Marcus Tullius Cicero and has been published by Liverpool University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1990 with History categories.

The Fifth Tusculan Disputation is the finest of the five books, its nearest rival being the First (already edited in this series). The middle three books, represented in this edition by the Second, are, as the author clearly intended, less elevated, though still showing Cicero's flair for elegant and lively exposition, and providing much valuable information about the teaching of the main Hellenistic philosophical schools, especially the Stoics. They argue that the perfect human life, or complete human well-being, that of the 'wise man', is unaffected by physical and mental distress or extremes of emotion. Against this background the Fifth puts the positive, mainly Stoic, case that virtue, moral goodness, is alone and of itself sufficient for complete well-being, providing an impressive climax to the whole work. Text with translation and comentary. (Aris and Phillips 1989)

Commentary On The Historia Apollonii Regis Tyri written by G. A. A. Kortekaas and has been published by BRILL this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007 with Literary Criticism categories.

This commentary is the sequel to G.A.A. Kortekaas' The Story of Apollonius, King of Tyre: A Study of Its Greek Origin and an Edition of the Two Oldest Latin Recensions. Whereas the critical edition (2004) could only briefly touch upon the numerous problems raised by the text concerning the origin (Latin or rather Greek?), the time and place of creation, the genesis of the text, the interrelation between the numerous manuscripts, especially between the two main recensions RA and RB, the present volume does address these issues in a detailed commentary, word by word and line by line. The many links with the Greek Novel, which today stands in the centre of scholarly interest, are striking. In this commentary the author attempts to show that the novel originated in Greece, or more precisely Asia Minor, possibly Tarsus. The two recensions (RA and RB) are closely compared, preference generally being given to RA. The volume discusses in detail the most recent publications on the subject. All these aspects make the present commentary attractive to scholars of many different disciplines.
