The eastern frontier of Byzantium and the interaction of the peoples that lived along it are the themes of this book. With a focus on the ninth to thirteenth centuries and dealing with both art history and history, the essays provide reconsiderations of Byzantine policy on its eastern borders, new interpretations and new materials on Byzantine relations with the Georgians, Armenians and Seljuqs, as well as studies on the writing of history among these peoples. Presenting research from Russia and Georgia as well as Europe and the USA, the contributors stress the interaction and interdependence of all the peoples along this frontier zone, and consider the different ways in which the political and cultural power of Byzantium was appropriated. They provide important comparative evidence for the relationship between local and Byzantine cultures, and open up new avenues for research into the history of eastern Anatolia and the Caucasus. Lawrence Krader wurde am 9.12.1919 in New York geboren, wo er bis Kriegsausbruch Philosophie und Ethnologie studierte. Er war Repräsentant für Ethnologie und Anthropologie im Social Science Council und Human Science Council (UNESCO), Leiter der Anthropologischen Sektion der Abteilung für Soziologie und Anthropologie am City College in New York, Vorsitzender der Abteilung für Soziologie und Anthropologie an der Universität Waterloo (Canada), Mitglied des Committee on Foreign Relations an der National Academy of Sciences und des Committee on Ecology beim National Research Council (Washington, DC) und von 1964 bis 1978 Secretary General der International Union of Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences. Im Jahre 1972 folgte L. Krader einem Ruf nach Berlin und wurde Ordinarius am Institut für Ethnologie an der Freien Universität, dem er bis 1982 als Direktor vorstand.

Even in the flattest landscape there are passes where the road first climbs to a peak and then descends into a new valley. Most of these passes are simply topography with little or no difference in climate, language, or culture between the valleys on either side. But some passes are different: they are true divides. History too knows such divides. Once these divides have been crossed, the social and political landscape changes; the social and political climate is different, and so is the social and political language. Some time between 1965 and 1973 we passed over such a divide and entered "the next century." Challenging, insightful, and provocative, Peter Drucker's The New Realities anticipates the central issues of a rapidly changing world. When it was initially published, in 1989, some reviewers mistakenly thought The New Realities was a book about the future, or in other words, a series of predictions.
