Excerpt from The Vegetation of Mona Island: A Paper Read by Invitation at the Twenty-Fifth Anniversary Celebration of the Missouri Botanical Garden, October 15, 1914 During the progress of the scientific survey of Porto Rico, organized by the New York Academy of Sciences with the aid of the American Museum of Natural History, the New York Botanical Garden and Columbia University, in cooperation with the Porto Rican Insular Government, exploration has been carried out not alone on the mainland of Porto Rico but on several small islands adjacent and politically a part of that colony. Two of these islands lie in the Mona Passage between Porto Rico and Santo Domingo, and being scientifically almost unknown, were made points of examination in February, 1914, when I visited them in company with Mr. John F. Cowell, Director of the Buffalo Botanic Garden, Dr. Frank E. Lutz, Assistant Curator of Invertebrate Zoology in the American Museum of Natural History, and Mr. W. E. Hess, Plant Propagator of the Porto Rico Agricultural Experiment Station at Mayaguez. The trip was made in a sloop chartered at Mayaguez. Desecheo Island, lying about eighteen miles northwest of Mayaguez, was first visited, and explored during two days; this island is somewhat more than one square mile in area, bordered by rocky coasts, rising abruptly into several hills, and covered with low trees and shrubs. Its flora is essentially identical with that of the drier parts of Porto Rico and of Santo Domingo; the small tree Morisonia americana and the snowy cactus (Mamillaria nivosa) have, however, not yet been found on the Porto Rican mainland, although both occur on the Island of Culebra east of Porto Rico, and neither of them is known on Santo Domingo. The cactus Opuntia haitiensis, plentiful there, is otherwise known only in Hispaniola, and the shrub Torrubia discolor of Hispaniola and Cuba has not been found on Porto Rico. Written by the leading authorities on the plant diversity and ecology of the Pacific islands, this book is a magisterial synthesis of the vegetation and landscapes of the islands of the Pacific Ocean. It is organized by island group, and includes information on geography, geology, phytogeographic relationships, and human influences on vegetation. Vegetation of the Tropical Pacific Islands features over 400 color photographs, plus dozens of maps and climate diagrams. The authors’ efforts in assembling the existing information into an integrated, comprehensive book will be welcomed by biogeographers, plant ecologists, conservation biologists, and all scientists with an interest in island biology.

Estimating The Population Size And Ecological Implications Of A Sula Sula Colony On Mona Island written by Walter Espíndola and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021 with categories.

Terrestrial ecosystems of small oceanic islands are often nutrient poor, and marine-derived inputs from mobile species such as seabirds can have key direct and indirect effects on their terrestrial food webs. Nutrients in the form of guano and carcasses generated by seabird colonies can readily be used by plants, detritivores and coprophagous arthropods. Increases in plant biomass and populations of smalls arthropods can in turn indirectly affect populations of animal consumers at higher trophic levels. Unfortunately, seabird colonies are declining worldwide due to harmful human impacts on islands and oceans. Thus, seabird declines can be expected to negatively impact the terrestrial ecosystems through nutrient reductions and subsequent losses of biodiversity. This thesis is focused on estimating the population size of the Sula sula L. colony in Mona Island and the indirect and direct effects on the terrestrial ecosystem. In chapter 1, we provided an estimate for the population of S. sula in Mona and compared results from surveys conducted at different times in order to determine the most adequate survey time. We also tested the effectiveness of drone photography to count active nests and compared it to data collected from ground-based surveys. We found that Mona island supports the second largest colony of S. sula in the Caribbean region, with approximately 5,500 birds. We also found that drone photography surveys can provide a cost-effective alternative to the more labor-intensive point-count or transect surveys given that more active nests are detected from aerial photographs than from ground surveys. In chapter 2, we explored some ecological consequences and effects of the S. sula colony on the terrestrial ecosystem, as well as areas without such influences in Mona Island. We also attempted to generate a map reconstructing the original extent of seabird colonies in Mona island by studying and comparing the remaining traces of stable isotopes of nitrogen (15N). We found that the allochthonous inputs have positive bottom-up effects in the system by increasing the productivity of plants, thus increasing the density and activity of animals. Also, they appear to unleash some top-down effects from introduced herbivores and predators that affect plants and animals. Furthermore, we discovered that an area comparable in size to the current colony probably existed but disappeared -- and with it -- the positive subsidies to the local populations of endemic plants and animals. The result from this thesis provided a reliable method to estimate seabird populations and highlight their importance in small oceanic islands.

The catalogue enumerates all taxa of Gymnosperms, Dicotyledons, and Monocotyledons occurring in the West Indies archipelago excluding the islands off the coast of Venezuela (Netherlands Antilles, Venezuelan Antilles, Tobago, and Trinidad). For each accepted taxon, nomenclature (including synonyms described from the West Indies and their references to publication), distribution in the West Indies (including endemic, native, or exotic status), common names, and a numerical listing of literature records are given. Type specimen citations are provided for accepted names and synonyms of Cyperaceae, Sapindaceae, and some selected genera in several families including the Apocynaceae (Plumeria), Aquifoliaceae (Ilex), and Santalaceae (Dendrophthora). More than 30,000 names were treated comprising 208 families, 2,033 genera, and 12,279 taxa, which includes exotic and commonly cultivated plants. The total number of indigenous taxa was approximately 10,470 of which 71% (7,446 taxa) are endemic to the archipelago or part of it. Fifteen new names, 37 combinations, and 7 lectotypifications are validated. A searchable website of this catalogue, maintained and continuously updated at the Smithsonian Institution, is available at http://botany.si.edu/antilles/WestIndies/.
