Translated by Jesse Lee Kercheval Eight years before Sylvia Plath published Ariel, the Uruguayan poet Idea Vilariño released Poemas de Amor, a collection of confessional, passionate poetry dedicated to the novelist Juan Carlos Onetti. Both of her own merit and as part of the Uruguayan writers group the Generation of ’45—which included Onetti, Mario Benedetti, Amanda Berenguer, and Ida Vitale—Vilariño is an essential South American poet, and part of a long tradition of Uruguayan women poets. Vilariño and Onetti’s love affair is one of the most famous in South American literature. Poemas de Amor is an intense book, full of poems about sexuality and what it means to be a woman, and stands as a testament to both the necessity and the impossibility of love. Seleccionados y traducidos por Antonio Rivero Taravillo e ilustrados por Kike de la Rubia y Nerea Pérez, son una excelente puerta de entrada a su obra. Como señala Luis Antonio de Villena: «Poe sigue siendo para la mayoría el padre del terror contemporáneo, con sus cuentos extraordinarios y fantásticos, de modo que el gran prosista —autor de ensayos y de una novela, Aventuras de Arthur Gordon Pym— habitualmente se ha superpuesto al poeta. Sin embargo, Poe publicó cuatro libros de poemas en vida y nunca dejó de considerarse, esencialmente, poeta. Tamerlán y otros poemas, de 1827, era su primer libro. Pero su libro de veras significativo fue El Cuervo y otros poemas, editado en 1845. Es este Poe, el del último libro de versos y algún poema suelto publicado en revistas al fin de su terrible y sombría vida, el que se constituyó en ese faro del Simbolismo, representado en el cuervo que dice “Never more” —Nunca más— posado en el busto de Palas Atenea.
