“Extraordinary . . . [Bolaño’s] greatest work.” —James Wood, The New York Times The book that catapulted Roberto Bolaño into international literary stardom, By Night in Chile is the final testimony of Sebastián Urrutia Lacroix—Chilean priest and member of Opus Dei, eminent literary critic and failed poet—as he is haunted by a shadowy figure from his past. In Urrutia’s feverish last hours, a deluge of memories pours from him: of hobnobbing with Santiago’s most unctuous literati; of undertaking a mission to save Europe’s decaying cathedrals from existential threat by pigeon excrement; of retreating into Greco-Roman poetry during the darkest chapter of modern Chilean history; of tutoring Augusto Pinochet in Marxist theory, so that the General may better understand his enemies. Throughout he insists, with fracturing conviction, that he was always on the right side of history. A novel about high art and fascism, silence and complicity, and, ultimately, the weight of damnation, Roberto Bolaño’s By Night in Chile is a deep-cutting satire and a work of devastating moral insight.

True Tales Of American Life written by Paul Auster and has been published by Faber & Faber this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-11-25 with History categories.

Chosen by Paul Auster out of the four thousand stories submitted to his radio programme on National Public Radio, these 180 stories provide a wonderful portrait of America in the twentieth century. The requirement for selection was that each of the stories should be true, and each of the writers should not have been previously published. The collection that has emerged provides a richly varied and authentic voice for the American people, whose lives, loves, griefs, regrets, joys and sense of humour are vividly and honestly recounted throughout, and adeptly organised by Auster into themed sections. The section composed of war stories stretches as far back as the Civil War, still the defining moment in American history; while the sequence of 'Meditations' conclude the volume with a true and abiding sense of transcendence. The resultant anthology is both an enduring hymn to the strange everyday of contemporary American life and a masterclass in the art of storytelling.

Stormy Isles, originally published in Portuguese in 1944 and set in the Azores between 1917 and 1919, focuses on the vivacious and sharp Margarida, who, at twenty years of age, is a model of feminist aspirations and the paragon of her generation. A member of the elite, she foregoes some of the entitlements of her class and struggles with the morals of the bourgeois society in which her life unfolds. Narrated in realist and poetic language as a series of interconnected tales within a larger story, this completely revised translation of Stormy Isles provides a rich, vivid portrait of the Azores in the early twentieth century.

A coded letter drives the devout monk Conrad into the bawdy, treacherous society of thirteenth-century Italy. His quest to discover the truth behind Saint Francis' death entangles Conrad in the lives of worldly merchants, scheming clerics, indomitable women, and even Pope Gregory X. Each step tests Conrad's severe morality, his astute mind, and his simple, loving heart. This richly imagined historical novel not only carries the reader into the lives of these authentic, irresistible characters, but also reveals the plausible truth of Saint Francis' death. Author John Sack drew on the writings of Francis' contemporaries: the biographies (or Legends) of Francis' life written in the forty years following his death, as well as the chronicles of the wandering friar Salimbene who appears in the novel. The crusades and various Church Councils described in the book refer to historical events. The popes and leaders of the Franciscan Order as well as most of the friars in the story, are also based on real people.

Martin Waldseem Ller S Carta Marina Of 1516 written by Chet Van Duzer and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-10-09 with History categories.

This open access book presents the first detailed study of one of the most important masterpieces of Renaissance cartography, Martin Waldseemüller’s Carta marina of 1516. By transcribing, translating into English, and detailing the sources of all of the descriptive texts on the map, as well as the sources of many of the images, the book makes the map available to scholars in a wholly unprecedented way. In addition, the book provides revealing insights into how Waldseemüller went about making the map -- information that can’t be found in any other source. The Carta marina is the result of Waldseemüller’s radical re-evaluation of what a world map should be; he essentially started from scratch when he created it, rejecting the Ptolemaic model and other sources he had used in creating his 1507 map, and added more descriptive texts and a wealth of illustrations. Given its content, the book offers an essential reference work not only on this map, but also for anyone working in sixteenth-century European cartography.

An NYRB Classics Original Thus Were Their Faces offers a comprehensive selection of the short fiction of Silvina Ocampo, undoubtedly one of the twentieth century’s great masters of the story and the novella. Here are tales of doubles and impostors, angels and demons, a marble statue of a winged horse that speaks, a beautiful seer who writes the autobiography of her own death, a lapdog who records the dreams of an old woman, a suicidal romance, and much else that is incredible, mad, sublime, and delicious. Italo Calvino has written that no other writer “better captures the magic inside everyday rituals, the forbidden or hidden face that our mirrors don’t show us.” Jorge Luis Borges flatly declared, “Silvina Ocampo is one of our best writers. Her stories have no equal in our literature.” Dark, gothic, fantastic, and grotesque, these haunting stories are among the world’s most individual and finest.
