Se plantea pensar a las Malvinas como parte de la Patagonia, para poder comprender su historia. El asentamiento en las Islas fue el primer proyecto argentino de colonización permanente de la Patagonia Austral. Los viajes a América a partir del s. XVI estaban impulsados por factores económicos, religiosos y políticos. La conquista, la conversión, la explotación, la clasificación e integración de territorios y personas a sistemas de conocimiento, se desarrollaron como acciones sistemáticas. Analizamos aquí tres siglos de historia de estas islas desde su descubrimiento, las expediciones españolas, las de los países bajos, las inglesas y las francesas. Luego la ocupación española permanente de 1774 a 1810 en Puerto Soledad como única expresión de soberanía en las islas. Tras una breve transición, en 1820, se toma posesión de las Islas Malvinas en nombre de las Provincias Unidas del Río de la Plata. El 10 de junio de 1829 se crea la Comandancia Político y Militar, Luis Vernet es nombrado Gobernador de Las Islas Malvinas y las adyacentes al Cabo de Hornos, en el mar Atlántico e inicia la colonia de Puerto Luis. Cuando la colonia estaba en pleno funcionamiento, fue truncada por la agresión y el desplazamiento forzoso de sus primeros pobladores, por parte de Estados Unidos que en 1832 destruyó y saqueó la colonia, y de Inglaterra que en un acto de agresión colonial usurpa las Islas en enero de 1833.
