My life while never easy, has been much like a shaky roller coaster ride. I've lived through rape, torment, domestic violence and family dysfunction. However I'm not bitter, actually I've learned a lot about myself. I chose to write this book about my life because I believe my story may help others be survivors and not victims. I found out much more about who I am as a person living through everything that life has thrown at me and in the end I found peace.

There are many emotions that need to be expressed for true healing to begin. Starting is the hard part. Inside this journal, I began the sentences for you. Completing them is your first step to healing. These particular sentences were created to help you to tap into those emotions you are afraid to share with others for fear of rejection. The pain of guilt, shame, fear, anger, anxiety, and other emotions you've been afraid to confront, are not yours to hold onto. We are a visual people. You have to see your pain to heal from it. As the former wife of John Allen Muhammad, the convicted and now executed, DC Sniper, I've felt no one could handle my emotions. I knew I had to get them outside of myself to heal. I began journaling and found more emotions I didn't realize existed. I couldn't tell anyone because I felt ashamed, guilty, and thought no one would believe me anyway. Writing them down gave me the opportunity to truly focus on my pain and how these emotions were affecting my everyday living. As I continued to write, without worrying about punctuation or how I would be accepted for what I was saying, my heart was no longer heavy. The more sentences I completed, the better I felt on a daily basis. Peace of mind is a wonderful thing! I'm so thankful to God for giving me the inspiration and guidance to share this journaling process with you. I hope and pray you will use it as a tool to help in your healing process. We all need to confront our emotional injuries we suffer on a daily basis. It is a long journey, however, it is worth the trip. A comprehensive safety plan, to escape your abusive relationship along with resources for victims/survivors are included.

Sexual Assault [Rape]: Moving from Victim to Survivor is a collection of facts that encompasses social, psychological, and legal aspects created to help you if you are a victim of sexual assault, or if you are part of a vulnerable population (college students, sexual minorities, military, and human trafficking victims). Also, use this book if you are the family, friend, or professional caring for someone who has been sexually assaulted (nurses, physicians, mental health providers, advocates, attorneys, and law enforcement personnel). The issue of sexual assault victimization is of great concern. President Barack Obama has stated, “Perhaps most important, we need to keep saying to anyone out there who has ever been assaulted: you are not alone. We have your back. I’ve got your back.” The White House is responding to alarming sexual assault statistics in the United States; especially among college students. This book is a response to the White House’s call to speak up; support all survivors; provide resources to students, advocates, and universities; and educate the public on the realities of abuse. Find strength with this book in the variety and relevance of topics covered. The journey begins with a basic definition of sexual assault, walking through the process of what to do after such an event, and ending with how to help someone who has suffered a sexual assault. Learn about victims’ rights, responses/reactions to sexual assault, the forensic (rape) exam, DNA evidence, reporting, law enforcement/criminal justice system, protection order/sexual violence injunction, financial help, alcohol- and drug-facilitated rape, and preventing victimization. I try to balance just the right amount of information and my professional experience to show you, if you are a victim of sexual assault, that you are not at fault; and that you should feel free to seek the help you need and deserve. Because of this common need to return to a normal life, a first step is to acknowledge the pain you are undergoing in order to work through this traumatic experience. This book can help. Likewise, professionals caring for the victim can gain a deeper understanding of the whole process of victimization and help the victim on the road to wholeness. Family and friends can become better prepared to support someone they care about. I leave this book in your hands, which is the result of concise, useful, helpful, understandable, and practical information put together to help individuals be prepared for and become knowledgeable in the process of recovering from sexual victimization.

Battered Women As Survivors written by Lee Ann Hoff and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-05-12 with Medical categories.

First published in 1990, this book is based on a field study of domestic abuse victims and their social network members. In a life history perspective, using values and network analysis, it uncovers the social context of a ‘secret’ crime against women and reveals the relationship between personal crisis and traditional attitudes toward women, marriage, the family, and violence. This book breaks new ground by redirecting attention beyond victim-blaming and the medicalization of violence to understanding domestic abuse victims as survivors who manage multiple crises despite public inattention to their plight. From analysis of the women’s struggles with violence and its aftermath, this book proposes a new crisis paradigm, which underscores the sociocultural aspects of crisis originating from violence. This book will be of interest to those studying social sciences, women’s studies, social work, health and mental health professions.

When hopelessness seems to be the only option, how do you find the strength to persevere through unimaginable circumstances? When the possibility of death looms in every corner of your mind, how can you emerge more resilient than before? What if you are mercilessly abused nearly to death by the very individual who has sworn to love you until "death do us part?" What do you do when you feel the darkness around you as if it is consuming you and inescapable?Unintentional Hero answers these questions in an extraordinary story of strength, faith, and resilience. After years of surviving in the shadows, bound by the chains of physical, mental, and emotional abuse, an oppressed woman found the courage not only to escape her oppressor, but also the courage to build a life focused on helping those like her. While this book explores one particular woman's harrowing journey, its message runs through the veins of every person who has been, or continues to be, a survivor of domestic violence. From the foreword notes, Rania explains "You are about to read about a time of my life, the circumstances of which are exceedingly difficult for most people to comprehend. At times, they're difficult for me to understand, and I lived through them. If you are, or have been, a victim of domestic violence, you already understand all too well. I offer you my unending support and hope for the life you deserve. If you are not (or have never been) a victim, as you read my story, you may wonder why I didn't "just" leave. People ask this question of victims all the time. And the answer is complex and dark, just as the abuse itself. The reason is it is based on a victim's state of mind -- a state of mind that is as bloody and bruised as any visible injuries. There is no simple comparison to a healthy, clear mindset with the capacity to make rational decisions.Abuse, in any form, is anything but rational. Victims are often brainwashed to believe that there are no options or ways out. And, even if we allowed ourselves the freedom of thought to realize there may be, we live in constant fear and under constant threats of what will happen if we try to leave. We know, better than anyone, what our abusers are capable of. Unintentional Hero is about finding light after years of being shrouded in darkness. Yet, as with all journeys, a survivor's path is not easy. A survivor of domestic violence must emerge from a seemingly bottomless abyss and search the very depths of their soul to begin the healing process and regain a sense of self. But like all survivor stories, there are heroes along the way who help navigate bumpy roads fraught with obstacles. Unintentional Hero explores the obstacles survivors face. Visible obstacles can heal quickly and easily with time, but it is the invisible roadblocks that stubbornly bury themselves in a survivor's mind that can wreak havoc for years. But sometimes, a person will cross our path in our darkest hour and chip away at the roadblock, eroding it until we can once again walk our path. That person is one of the remarkable people who doesn't necessarily intend to make an impact, yet often makes the biggest one. Unintentional Hero helps survivors of domestic violence understand that even when all feels lost, a hero may be just around the corner, if only they have the courage to look. Above all, this book offers love and support.Unintentional Hero embodies what the human spirit is capable of when we possess the will not only to change our circumstances, but to acknowledge the efforts of the unintentional heroes who may have helped save our lives."This book is dedicated to victims of domestic abuse. May your bruises heal, your scars fade, and your minds clear. May the darkness fade into shadows and the shadows disappear into light. May you find the life that you deserve."
