L'intrigue se d�roule � Paris en 1482. Les deux premiers livres du roman suivent Pierre Gringoire, po�te sans le sou. Gringoire est l'auteur d'un myst�re qui doit �tre repr�sent� le 6 janvier 1482 au Palais de justice en l'honneur d'une ambassade flamande. Malheureusement, l'attention de la foule est vite distraite, d'abord par le mendiant Clopin Trouillefou, puis par les ambassadeurs eux-m�mes, et enfin par l'organisation improvis�e d'une �lection du Pape des fous � l'occasion de la F�te des Fous qui a lieu ce jour-l�. Le sonneur de cloches de Notre-Dame, Quasimodo, est �lu Pape des Fous en raison de sa laideur. Le myst�re finit par s'arr�ter, faute de public. Gringoire, � cette occasion, entend parler d'Esmeralda, une danseuse boh�mienne qui passe pour �gyptienne. L'ayant aper�ue, il la suit dans les rues de Paris � la tomb�e de la nuit. Esmeralda manque d'�tre enlev�e par Quasimodo accompagn� d'un myst�rieux homme v�tu de noir (qui se r�v�lera �tre l'archidiacre de Notre-Dame, Claude Frollo), mais elle est sauv�e par l'intervention d'un capitaine de la garde, Phoebus de Ch�teaupers. Gringoire qui a �t� renvers� lors de l'intervention reprend ses esprits un peu plus tard et erre dans les rues, il se retrouve sans le vouloir au coeur de la Cour des miracles, le quartier hant� par les pires truands de la capitale. Il manque d'y �tre pendu, et doit la vie � l'intervention d'Esmeralda qui le prend pour mari, mais seulement pour le sauver.
