Existing studies of the Vietnam War have been written mostly from an American perspective, using western sources, and viewing the conflict through western eyes. This book, based on extensive original research, including Vietnamese, Chinese and former Soviet sources, presents a history of the war from the perspective of the Vietnamese communists. It charts relations with Moscow and Beijing, showing how the involvement of the two major communist powers changed over time, and how the Vietnamese, despite their huge dependence on the Chinese and the Soviets, were most definitely in charge of their own decision making. Overall, it provides an important corrective to the many one-sided studies of the war, and presents a very interesting new perspective.

What Americans refer to as the Vietnam War embraces much more than the conflict with North Vietnam. Milton J. Bates considers the other conflicts that Americans brought to that war: the divisions stemming from differences in race, class, sex, generation, and frontier ideology. In exploring the rich vein of writing and film that emerged from the Vietnam War era, he strikingly illuminates how these stories reflect American social crises of the period. Some material examined here is familiar, including the work of Michael Herr, Tim O'Brien, Philip Caputo, Susan Sontag, Francis Ford Coppola, and Oliver Stone. Other material is less well known—Neverlight by Donald Pfarrer and De Mojo Blues by A. R. Flowers, for example. Bates also draws upon an impressive range of secondary readings, from Freud and Marx to Geertz and Jameson. As the products of a culture in conflict, Vietnam memoirs, novels, films, plays, and poems embody a range of political perspectives, not only in their content but also in their structure and rhetoric. In his final chapter Bates outlines a "politico-poetics" of the war story as a genre. Here he gives special attention to our motives—from the deeply personal to the broadly cultural—for telling war stories.

Vietnam (and it neighbours Cambodia and Laos) has experienced much change and turmoil. Vietnam - Conflict and Change in Indochina looks at the early history of the region, colonisation by the French and how this stimulated the growth of nationalism, particularly in the ?. Just as Vietnam dominates the area geographically, so the history of Vietnam dominates the history of its neighbours, and so the impcact of the Vietnam Wars is considered from a variety of angles: * the conflict between the communist north and the non-communist south * the roles of the different Vietnamese and non-Vietnamese armies * the types of warfare employed * the involvement of the USA and its allies, including Australia * the Allies' withdrawal and its consequences * the anti-war movements * the effect of the fighting on those most directly involved - the soldiers and civilians Finally the current situation is analysed in terms of each country's economic woes, the tragedy of refugees, the problems experienced by returned veterans, and the obligations of other countries to assist Indochina's recovery. Vietnam - Conflict and Change in Indochina provides a wide range of official and non-official documents as well as supplementary photographs, illustrations and maps that give students a comrehensive picture of the turbulent situationin Indochina. Stimulating activities and questions are designed to develop students' historical skills, especially that of empathising with the participants and the victims of the conflict.

"Dale Walton's book offers a unique and comprehensive analysis that considers US strategic decisionmaking at a number of levels, and shows how US errors created the military and political conditions that made North Vietnamese victory possible. If the United States' political-military effort had not negated its main advantages - indeed, even if it had avoided only a small number of its many strategic errors - the outcome of the Indochina conflict would most likely have been very different, the author argues."--BOOK JACKET.
