There is growing acknowledgement that torture is too narrowly defined in law, and that psychological and/or sexualised violence against women is not adequately recognized as torture. Clearly conceptualising torturous violence, this book offers scholars and practitioners critical reflections on how torture is defined and the implications that narrow definitions may have on survivors. Drawing on over a decade of research and interviews with psychologists, practitioners and women seeking asylum, it sets out the implications of the social silencing of torture, and torturous violence specifically. It invites us to consider alternative ways to understand and address the impacts of physical, sexualized and psychological abuses.

Feeling Trapped written by James Ptacek and has been published by Univ of California Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-01-24 with Family & Relationships categories.

The relationship between class and intimate violence against women is much misunderstood. While many studies of intimate violence focus on poor and working-class women, few examine the issue comparatively in terms of class privilege and class disadvantage. James Ptacek draws on in-depth interviews with sixty women from wealthy, professional, working-class, and poor communities to investigate how social class shapes both women's experiences of violence and the responses of their communities to this violence. Ptacek's framing of women's victimization as "social entrapment" links private violence to public responses and connects social inequalities to the dilemmas that women face.

As a reflection of the iMPACTS Project, an international research partnership that investigates sexual violence at universities and in society, this edited collection is the first to take a multi-disciplinary approach to understanding and addressing sexual violence and gender-based violence in Canada. The first section of the book examines law/policy issues impacting universities, while the second section explores student activism and university responses to students' experiences of sexual violence. The third section examines sexual violence interventions through education and pedagogy, including an arts-based toolkit, a theatre production, and an international internship program. The fourth and final section focuses on vulnerable communities, including online and in person as well as within legal, human rights, and social justice frameworks. While law and education are two major themes in this book, systematic and institutional discrimination are also examined. As such, this book emphasizes intersectional identities and the disproportionate effects of sexual and gender-based violence on marginalized communities. This book addresses policy makers, educators, students, workshop facilitators, archivists, theatre professionals, and members of the general public. This book could be recommended reading in university level courses across a range of subject areas including law, policy, education, gender studies, health, and sociology. This edited collection is unique in that it is focuses on the Canadian context and consolidates emerging research on sexual violence from a variety of disciplines.

In 2012, the UK introduced the ‘Preventing Sexual Violence Initiative’. This work examines whether it is actually possible to prevent sexual violence being employed as a weapon of war against women, men and children. It assesses existing prevention strategies, uses Daesh as a case study – to illustrate the limitations of the current approaches – and considers additional measures. The author concludes that it is possible to prevent sexual violence in war, provided that all appropriate measures are harnessed and adapted to the specific circumstances of each conflict. It will, though, require improvements to existing strategies, the use of additional prevention measures, more resources and long-term engagement of all actors. This volume was awarded the 2017 first prize in EuroISME’s annual best thesis contest.

This edited collection provides an intersectional and transnational exploration of representations of sexual violence and rape within films, television shows, and digital media in the contemporary context of the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements. Drawing upon sociology, gender studies, cultural studies, media studies, and Black feminist studies, chapters focus on women and texts at the margins of mainstream culture’s depictions of sexual violence. The editors and contributors examine the dominant narrative of the thin, cisgender, heterosexual white female victim, and the ways in which social and cultural conversations around race and gender impact and are impacted by depictions of sexual violence in media. This book will be of interest to scholars and students in sociology, gender studies, and media studies, particularly those interested in the intersectionality of race and gender. With contributions from a diverse array of international scholars, this edited volume offers a renewed understanding of gender-based violence (GBV) by examining its social and political dimensions in migration contexts. This book engages micro, meso, and macro levels of analysis by foregrounding a conceptualization of GBV that addresses both its interpersonal and structural causes. Chapters explore how GBV frameworks and migration management intersect, bringing to the forefront the specific inequalities these intersections produce for migrant women. Drawing upon several disciplines, the authors engage in co-writing a critical engagement which proposes an original understanding of how the concepts of intersectionality, vulnerability and precarity speak to each other from a feminist perspective. This volume will be of interest to scholars/researchers and policymakers in Gender Studies, Migration and Refugee Studies, Sociology, Political Science, Trauma Studies, Human Rights and Socio-Legal Studies.

Les Violences Sexuelles L Adolescence written by Pascal Roman and has been published by Elsevier Masson this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-01-01 with Medical categories.

Presenting a range of conceptual, methodological, and empirical chapters, the book tackles issues related to, or missing from, journalism in three sections: Part I acknowledges and surveys the role journalism plays in shining a light on social injustices and critiques research deficits in reporting on sexual violence; Part II employs cutting-edge research linked to an intersectional lens to amplify the voices that have been silenced in the media coverage; Part III explores how advocacy, campaign, and solutions journalism offers frameworks for ethical reporting on the shadow epidemic of sexual violence during these COVID-normal times.
