The different traditions that have inspired the contributors to this volume can be divided along three different orientations, one that is rooted predominantly in sociolinguistics, a second that is ethnomethodologically informed, and a third that came in the wake of narrative interview research. All three share a commitment to view self and identity not as essential properties of the person but as constituted in discursive practices and particularly in narrative. Moreover, since self and identity are held to be phenomena that are contextually and continually generated, they are defined and viewed in the plural, as selves and identities. In the attempt of moving closer toward a process-oriented approach to the formation of selves and identities, this volume sets the stage for future discussions of the role of narrative and discourse in this generation process and for how a close analysis of these processes can advance an understanding of the world around us and within this world, of identities and selves.

Este JesUs se convirtiO en hombre--completamente Dios y completamente hombre, en una sola persona--por nosotros para acercarnos a Dios. Sin embargo, se le presenta en la Navidad con humildad increIble. El Dios de todo el universo se dignO a nacer en un establo, rodeado de pobreza y enorme indignidad. El mensaje de la Navidad, con toda su dulzura, nos ofrece esperanza. Cristo vino a reinar en nuestros corazones. Esta oferta nos da mAs de cualquier cosa que el mundo nos ofrece. El mensaje de la Navidad es mAs importante, mAs duradera (nada le gana a la eternidad!), mAs placentera, y mAs honorable a Dios. Pero, existe un problema. Hemos sido cortados radicalmente de Dios por nuestros pecados y nuestra rebeliOn contra El. Ahora, Dios debe condenar el pecado, pues El es santo. Un Dios santo se enfrenta a rebeldes a quienes El creO-- y aUn asI los ama! La Biblia lo describe de esta manera, "Todos andAbamos perdidos, como ovejas; cada uno seguIa su propio camino" (IsaIas 53:6); "pues todos han pecado y estAn privados de la gloria de Dios" (Romanos 3:23). La soluciOn divina era que su Hijo naciera como hombre, viviera la vida perfecta, y muriera la muerte "perfecta" como nuestro Unico suplente aceptable y asI resolver nuestra separaciOn de Dios. El SeNor nos amO lo suficiente para mandar a su Hijo a morir en nuestro lugar, asI expresando perfectamente los polos opuestos del carActer de Dios--amor y justicia. "Cristo JesUs vino al mundo a salvar a los pecadores" (1 Timoteo 1:15). Y "hay un solo mediador entre Dios y los hombres...quien dio su vida como rescate por todos" (1 Timoteo 2:5-6). Dios, al sacrificar a su Hijo, expresO perfectamente su justicia absoluta y su amor ilimitado. Razones por las que nos debe interesar el nacimiento del "niNo Dios" Nos debe importar este niNo por todo lo que hizo por nosotros. MuriO en una cruz como criminal, aunque era completamente libre de pecado. Entonces, tres dIas despuEs, resucitO de entre los muertos, lo cual comprobO que la paga por las consecuencias de nuestros pecados fue aceptada por completo por Dios nuestro Padre. "Dios...lo resucitO y glorificO, de modo que [nuestra] fe y [nuestra] esperanza estAn puestas en Dios" (1 Pedro 1:21). Posteriormente, cuando regrese al mundo, vendrA como el Rey en su gloria y en juicio. Lo que importarA en ese dIa serA si la gente lo ha rechazado al considerarlo como "nada mAs que un niNo." La Navidad no es sentimental; es instrumental. Es por esto que nos debe importar el "niNo Dios." Claro, los villancicos, los arbolitos navideNos, y las luces estAn bien. Pero la Navidad no es una sensaciOn sentimental; es un instrumento para efectuar un cambio. Todo comienza con la humildad--la humildad para reconocer que el instrumento que Dios usa para cambiar tu vida se encuentra en un pesebre, en un establo, en el medio de la nada. El cambio viene al aceptar la verdad de que no hay nada que uno pueda hacer para satisfacer la justicia de Dios, sino sOlo creer que el SeNor de los cielos y la tierra se convirtiO en el niNo Dios para ser tu Salvador. COmo le responderAs en esta Navidad?
