On Becoming Cuban is a sweeping cultural history of the sustained encounter between the peoples of the two countries and of the ways that this encounter helped shape Cubans' identity, nationality, and sense of modernity from the early 1850s until the revolution of 1959. Using an enormous range of Cuban and U.S. sources--from archival records and oral interviews to popular magazines, novels, and motion pictures--Perez reveals a powerful web of everyday, bilateral connections between the United States and Cuba and shows how U.S. cultural forms had a critical influence on the development of Cubans' sense of themselves as a people and as a nation. He also articulates the cultural context for the revolution that erupted in Cuba in 1959. In the middle of the twentieth century, Perez argues, when economic hard times and political crises combined to make Cubans painfully aware that their American-influenced expectations of prosperity and modernity would not be realized, the stage was set for revolution.

Mi mejor amigo (cuyo nombre ocultaré y desde ahora le diré Chino) me introdujo recientemente al mundo de las citas en una aplicación llamada Tinder; seguramente la mayoría de ustedes la conocen pero yo nunca me había atrevido a usarla por miedo o por no forzar algo que debería suceder en mi café favorito en una tarde de viernes cualquiera. Si alguna de las personas que está leyendo esto, desconoce qué es Tinder, se los explico en una frase: “Dícese de la app que con tus fotos de Facebook genera un perfil que se muestra de manera aleatoria a las personas que se encuentran cerca de ti para que decidan si les gusta lo que tus papás te dieron genéticamente - obviamente combinado con tus filtros favoritos- y si a ti también te gusta, se abre un chat para que puedan platicar.” Dicho lo anterior, decidí no sólo comenzar a usar esta aplicación del diablo, sino que también me di a la tarea iniciar una batalla encarnada contra el tiempo demostrando que en un determinado número de citas (no me quise aventurar a elegir una cifra exacta ya que el amor puede ser encontrado tan rápidamente como un fan de britney en zona rosa o tan complicado como un verso poético en alguna canción de reggeaton) podría encontrar el amor verdadero. Bienvenidos a este viaje donde mi boleto de ida es el tiempo perdido y mi regreso será el amor.
