New Perspectives on the War Film addresses the gap in the representation of many forgotten faces of war in mainstream movies and global mass media. The authors concentrate on the untold narratives of those who fought in combat and were affected by its brutal consequences. Chapters discuss the historically under-represented stories of individuals including women, African-American and Indigenous Soldiers. Issues of homosexuality and gender relations in the military, colonial subjects and child soldiers, as well as the changing nature of war via terrorism and bioterrorism are closely analyzed. The contributors demonstrate how these viewpoints have been consistently ignored in mainstream, blockbuster war sagas and strive to re-integrate these lost perspectives into current and future narratives.

An excellent contribution to the growing studies on American films and to the war film genre in particular. The author defines war movies as those in which combat or its influence are central, although "military movies" in which military men are portrayed in training or preserving peace are also considered. Within these definitions, Suid selects several dozen films from The Big Parade (1925) to Apocalypse Now and uses them to develop his main themes: the image of the military presented to mass audiences and the related question of the military's assistance to film makers. The relationship between Washington and Hollywood that emerges will be a disappointment for anyone seeking confirmation of conspiracy. The Pentagon is always looking for positive portrayals of the services, and the military's chief concern has been for accuracy in detail and procedure with increasing sensitivity to any costs to taxpayers. The author concludes that as long as movies can portray individual bravery, perseverance, or the excitement of challenging death in personal combat, "they will maintain their special place in American homes and theaters."

From 'The Deer Hunter' to 'Platoon', the Vietnam cycle of films that America has been producing since the 1970s has had an impact on audiences on both sides of the Atlantic. This book offers an overview of the genre, including such films as 'Full Metal Jacket', 'Platoon', 'Rambo: First Blood' and 'Apocalypse Now'. Aiming to show the ways these films operate as fantasy wish-fulfilment, an attempt to come to terms with the war, and as simply an opportunity for action, this book will appeal to all viewers, students and fans of the Vietnam War film.

This book examines representations of the Second World War in postwar Chinese and Japanese cinema. Drawing on a wide range of scholarly disciplines, and analysing a wide range of films, it demonstrates the potential of war movies for understanding contemporary China and Japan. It shows how the war is remembered in both countries, including the demonisation of Japanese soldiers in postwar socialist-era Chinese movies, and the pervasive sense of victimhood in Japanese memories of the war. However, it also shows how some Chinese directors were experimenting with alternatives interpretations of the war from as early as the 1950s, and how, despite the "resurgence of nationalism" in japan since the 1980s, the production of Japanese movies critical of the war has continued.

Wars have played a momentous role in shaping the course of human history. The ever-present specter of conflict has made it an enduring topic of interest in popular culture, and many movies, from Hollywood blockbusters to independent films, have sought to show the complexities and horrors of war on-screen. In The Philosophy of War Films, David LaRocca compiles a series of essays by prominent scholars that examine the impact of representing war in film and the influence that cinematic images of battle have on human consciousness, belief, and action. The contributors explore a variety of topics, including the aesthetics of war as portrayed on-screen, the effect war has on personal identity, and the ethical problems presented by war. Drawing upon analyses of iconic and critically acclaimed war films such as Saving Private Ryan (1998), The Thin Red Line (1998), Rescue Dawn (2006), Restrepo (2010), and Zero Dark Thirty (2012), this volume's examination of the genre creates new ways of thinking about the philosophy of war. A fascinating look at the manner in which combat and its aftermath are depicted cinematically, The Philosophy of War Films is a timely and engaging read for any philosopher, filmmaker, reader, or viewer who desires a deeper understanding of war and its representation in popular culture.
