This book explores in depth six Gospel scenes so as to discover in these the essential elements of Christian discipleship. It describes the basic requirements for receiving the Word of God effectively in our hearts: namely, that we "become wet clay in God's hands", so that God can impress upon us any form he chooses. It also contemplates the vital position of the Mother of the Lord in the life of his disciples. The author shows that the call to discipleship is above all an invitation to intimate companionship with Jesus, as we read in Mark: "Jesus called to him those whom he desired... in order that they might be with him" (3:14-15). What we normally call the "active apostolate" can never be an end in itself, but only the fruits of a life of prayer and adoration. These are what must be at the heart of a disciple's life, which can never be swept up by mere activism.

The Walking with God series was developed as the curriculum for small groups at Willow Creek Community Church in South Barrington, Illinois. Since its release in 1992, it has been used by churches and small groups to help raise up devoted disciples of Christ. Group members who work through the program will lay a solid foundation for a lifelong walk with God. While small groups may be formed for a variety of purposes, the goal of this curriculum is for groups to produce disciples—fully devoted followers of Christ—by studying God’s Word in community. To this end, the goal of the study is to produce disciples who walk with God, have a personal relationship with Jesus, and live in step with the Holy Spirit. It is also to produce believers who live the Word in all areas of life and contribute to the work that God is doing in the local church. Ultimately, the goal is to develop believers who impact the world and are prepared and eager to spread the good news of Christ to others. This material will help develop these attributes in group members. Each lesson includes group Bible study and discussion questions in addition to devotions, reflections, and personal study for use by individuals between the group sessions.

In the beginning, they were called disciples, and the early believers knew what the word meant. Disciples were those who trusted the Lord, knew His voice, followed Him wherever He led them, and were obedient to everything He told them to do. Then a Roman government official in Antioch invented a new name. He called the disciples in this church, Christianoi. Christian and the identity of disciples slowly began to disappear. Today, only one, the term, Christian, is widely used in churches round the world. But even this name has been interpreted in as many ways as there are church denominations. In his book, Dr. Brian has examined each of the six names for disciples that the scriptures use: sinner, saint, child of God, Christian, disciple, bond slave. He treats each of the six names, not merely as useful information but as teachings that can profoundly influence the lives of those who long to be the Lord's disciples. In his final chapters, Dr. Brian takes a careful look at what the cross means for disciples. He presents a number of valuable biblical principles that both inform and challenge those who long to follow the Lord as His disciples in the twenty-first century.

"Follow my example as I follow the example of Christ." - 1 Corinthians 11:1, NIVJesus walked the shores of Galilee and called ordinary fishermen to drop their nets to follow Him. "Follow me" wasn't a suggestion, but a summons from the very Son of God. In response, they left everything known and comfortable to live with Jesus, learn from Jesus be launched by Jesus to go and make disciples in His name. Their lives and this world has never been the same.Jesus still calls ordinary people by name to follow him. The problem is many churches today are filled with people who claim to believe in Jesus, but whose lives don't reflect his character and calling. Many fans. Few followers. Many believers. Few disciples. That needs to change. Which is why the leaders of Grace Church focused their efforts in 2010 to launch the Way of Discipleship to aggressively respond to the Great Commission to "go and make disciples of all nations." The Way of Discipleship is a time-bound, intentional relationship focused on learning and embracing 11 essential practices to following Jesus Christ. The Way of Discipleship is engages one person (a discipler) who invites another person (a disciple) to follow them as they follow Christ. The Way of Discipleship shapes our character (who we are) and our calling (what we do). Like a tree, the Way of Discipleship roots us in Christ, provides stability to weather the storms of life and branches out to bear fruit in our lives. This resource is a tool to facilitate this relationship over a period of one-to-three years to integrate these practices into one's life and prepare the disciple to replicate it into another relationship. It will be costly, but the cause is worth it more than anything else the world has to offer.

The Way of the Disciple is designed to help followers of Christ establish a Biblical foundation for life and leadership. This workbook is an inductive Bible study of the Sermon on the Mount and is intended to facilitate "discovery learning" for a foundation in "spirit and truth" that will stand the test of time and help you to establish a Bible-centered lifestyle for honoring God and finishing well. This workbook is formatted using the IDEA approach to discovery learning. Each chapter includes four sections: Introduction (I) - various translations and paraphrases of the passage to be studied Discovery (D) - study questions to help you better understand the passage Explanation (E) - exegetical notes for the passage to help you interpret the passage Application (A) - questions to help you apply passages to your life and leadership This workbook utilizes the inductive Bible study method involving: Observation - "What do I see?" Interpretation - "What does it mean?" Correlation - "How does this relate to what the rest of the Bible says?" Application - "What does it mean to me?" The Way of the Disciple is not meant everyone. It is not an easy way to gain insights about the Sermon on the Mount. Actually, it is an invitation to do some time-consuming "digging" into the meaning and application of each passage by developing Bible study skills useful for studying additional passages in the Bible. Take your time and prayerfully and carefully read, study, discuss, apply, and evaluate your progress. Becoming a Bible-centered leader is not an objective as much as it is a lifestyle. Over the years, as you study the Bible faithfully, you will be transformed and God will reveal the "meat" of his word as you remain "teachable."

Discipleship and sonship are intimately connected. Jesus was a Son to His Father and a rabbi to His disciples. His goal was to teach His disciples how to be sons by introducing them to the Father and calling them to follow Him and imitate Him as Gods beloved Son. They were to be His replicas on earth, training others to follow Him. Jesus was a Jew, born and raised in the Jewish language and culture of His day. Out of this richness He invited and trained uneducated men to take His yoke, learn from Him and go into the world to set people free from their yokes of bondage. Westernization has obscured the Biblical meaning of discipleship and spawned believers who have lost the truth and simplicity of following Jesus. The church has been fragmented by theology and tradition instead of being united by the Spirit of Jesus. Jesus stripped Judaism of its impositions by taking people back to the Torah and explaining what God meant, not what rabbis imposed on it. This book is an attempt to re-introduce believers to Jesuss yoke by teaching them to embrace the spirit of Torah, which reflects, not rules or religion but mercy, based on the love of the Father.
