The exhilarating dystopian novel that inspired George Orwell's 1984 and foreshadowed the worst excesses of Soviet Russia Yevgeny Zamyatin's We is a powerfully inventive vision that has influenced writers from George Orwell to Ayn Rand. In a glass-enclosed city of absolute straight lines, ruled over by the all-powerful 'Benefactor', the citizens of the totalitarian society of OneState live out lives devoid of passion and creativity - until D-503, a mathematician who dreams in numbers, makes a discovery: he has an individual soul. Set in the twenty-sixth century AD, We is the classic dystopian novel and was the forerunner of works such as George Orwell's 1984 and Aldous Huxley's Brave New World. It was suppressed for many years in Russia and remains a resounding cry for individual freedom, yet is also a powerful, exciting and vivid work of science fiction. Clarence Brown's brilliant translation is based on the corrected text of the novel, first published in Russia in 1988 after more than sixty years' suppression.

"The Machine Stops" by E.M. Forster, now presented in a beautifully illustrated edition, is a visionary and thought-provoking novella that explores the perils of technological dependency and the potential consequences of a society overly reliant on machines. Set in a future where humanity lives underground, isolated in individual cells, their every need attended to by an all-encompassing Machine, the story follows Vashti, a lecturer and true believer in the Machine's omnipotence. However, as the Machine begins to show signs of malfunction, Vashti's worldview is challenged, leading to a series of events that question the very foundations of her society. "The Machine Stops" remains a compelling exploration of the dangers of sacrificing human connections for the convenience of technology. This illustrated edition provides a fresh perspective on Forster's timeless work, making it an engaging and visually captivating experience for both new and returning readers.

A radical new translation of the dystopian classic that influenced George Orwell and Aldous Huxley, introduced by Margaret Atwood. One State is the perfect society, ruled over by the enlightened Benefactor. It is a city made almost entirely of glass, where surveillance is universal and life runs according to algorithmic rules to ensure perfect happiness. And Chief Engineer D-503 is the ideal citizen, at least until he meets I-330, who opens his eyes to new ideas of love, sex, and freedom. A foundational work of dystopian fiction, inspiration for both Orwell's 1984 and Huxley's Brave New World, We is a book of radical imaginings--of control and rebellion, surveillance and power, machine intelligence and human inventiveness, sexuality and desire. It is both a warning and a hope for a better world. This new edition also includes Ursula K. Le Guin's essay "The Stalin in the Soul" on the enduring influence of Zamyatin's masterpiece, and George Orwell's 1946 review of We.

'WE' is a Dystopian novel by Soviet dissident Yevgeny Zamyatin. It was written between 1920-1921, right after the Russian Revolution. It was first published as an English translation by Gregory Zilboorg in 1924. The themes and ideals expressed in 'WE' offer a powerfully inventive vision of the future that later heavily influenced Aldous Huxley's 'Brave New World' and George Orwell's '1984'. It was Zamyatin's book that others borrowed from and helped give birth to a distinctive Dystopian fictive genre. His work gave way to ideas of futurism and post-apocalyptic storytelling. At the core of such like-minded stories, 'WE's principles are still predominant in today's popular books, film, and television. The story describes a world of harmony and conformity within a united totalitarian state. The reader finds a uniform society where individuality is viewed as a dysfunction and where thinking for oneself can be the most dangerous thing. Within a glass-enclosed city ruled by the all-powerful 'Benefactor', the citizens of OneState live out their lives devoid of passion and creativity - until the book's main character, D-503, a mathematician who dreams in numbers, makes a discovery; he learns he has an individual soul. Set in the 26th-century, 'WE' is one of the most powerful Dystopias of all time and has been perceived as a general warning about totalitarianism, the dangers of reducing people to just numbers and conditioning them inside a standard system of conformity. ART STORIA | Literary Classics is a collection of influential books that have transformed storytelling and philosophical thinking while remaining relevant to the modern reader. 2020 Reprint of the 1959 Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition and not reproduced with Optical Recognition software. This edition reprints the first English Language Edition translated by Gregory Zilboorg in 1924 and published by E. P. Dutton in New York. Contains a new introduction by Peter Rudy and a preface by Marc Slonim. The novel describes a world of ostensible harmony and conformity within a united totalitarian state. George Orwell claimed that Aldous Huxley's 1931 Brave New World must be partly derived from We, but Huxley denied it. Along with Jack London's The Iron Heel, We is generally considered to be the grandfather of the satirical futuristic dystopia genre. It takes the modern industrial society to an extreme conclusion, depicting a state that believes that free will is the cause of unhappiness, and that citizens' lives should be controlled with mathematical precision based on the system of industrial efficiency created by Frederick Winslow Taylor. The Soviet attempt at implementing Taylorism, led by Aleksei Gastev, may have influenced Zamyatin's portrayal of the One State. It remains a classic nearly one hundred years after publication.
